Recovery Impossible.

Tho Hincraoa reports that the Tasmania has sunk fully ten feet sinco she was previously observed. Operation to recover the mails were
continued on Saturday in smooth water. Diver McUiven, from New Plymouth, was the first to go down, and lie remained under water 25 minutes. On returning to tho surface lie reported that one hatch from the hold containing the mails had
fallen m and with difficulty lie crawled between the gratings into j the hold, which ho found full c.f ; liquid mud, and when his head dis- I appeared below the surface of this j he was nearly suffocated. He came to tho surface quite exhausted, j Wilkie, the other diver, was then j sent down, and after five minutes submersion he returned verifying i HcGiven’s statement. Both divers !
agree that it is quite impossible to j recover the mails. The Hinemoa will complete tho survey of the scene of the wreck, which is estimated to ] occupy a week. Wki.linoton. This Day.
The Postal Department has finally abandoned the idea of recovering the Tasmania’s mails.
