RACING IN AUSTRALIA.

A.J.C. MEETING. SYDNEY, October 5. The A.J.C. opened the spring carnival at Randwick in ideal weather, the attendance being 57,000, as against 78.000 on the opening day last year. John Buchan, which is a strong public fancy for the Metropolitan on Monday, strengthened his supporters’ hopes by brilliantly winning the Trial Stakes in the smart time of 2min 4sec. The New Zealand horses had a Ran time, as compared with the results at the corresponding meeting last year, and were equal to getting only three minor placings. Phar Lap continued his winning way in the Spring Stakes. The champion was never off the bit First Acre- made a bold bid for the second division of the Kensington Handicap. He was unable to get clear of the field early, but finished so strongly „hat victory would have been bis in a few extra strides.

Following are the results:— HURDLES. —Drake. 9.5 (Callum). 1; Ragatzky, 10.2 (Giles). 2; Bensbun, 9.2 (Aldridge), 3. Eleven started. Clear Flight smartly ran to the front and led the field by 10 lengths over the first jump from Ragatzky, Paul T, Perides, and St. General, but the latter came down. Passing the mile. Ragatzky had charge from Drake. Per ides, Bensbun. and Gregollo. Turning for home, Drake ran past Ragatzky, and, going on. won nicely by two lengths. Time, 3min 40|sec. TRIAL STAKES. —John Buchan, 8.3 (Reynolds), 1; Brazen Face, 7.9 (Hickey). 2; Quickfirer 8.3 (M'Carten), 3. Sixteen started. Brazen Face was smartest away from Flinders, Woodgera, Red Royal, and John Buchan. Clapping on the pace passing the mile. Braz. n I ace increased his lead to eight lengths clear of Havanother, Sackbut, John Buchan, and Bosmina. Turning for home, Brazen Face was still well clear of the field, followed by John Buchan, who moved smartly into second position passing the half-mile. Continuing his fast finishing effort, John Btichan passed Brazen Face at the distance and won with ease by two lengths. Time, 2min 4see. '

KENSINGTON HANDICAP.—First division: Citamon, 9.9 (Blundell), 1; Spearman. 9.3 (M'Lachlan). 2; Mystic Peak, 10.10 (R. Reed), 3. Fourteen started, including Cool Mint. Perception, and I’m Alone. From an even start, Panola was first to break the line from Citamon and Cool Mint. Casque Dor showed the way to the straight just clear of Citamon. Cool Mint, Panola, and Spearman. Putting in a brilliant finishing run. Citamon won under pressure by a neck. Time, Imin 25sec.

A.J.C. DERBY, One mile and a-half. TREGILLA, Mr C. C. Battye’s ch c (Treclare —Maltgilla). 8 10 (Bar tie) 1 VEILMOND, 8.10 (M’Carten) .. .. 2 BALLOON KING. 8.10 (Pike) .. .. 3

Fourteen started, and the field moved off on to a splendid start. When they settled down Bay Acre led from Delwood. Calmond, Doctor’s Orders, Sargon, and Balloon King. Going out of the straight Bay Acre increased his lead to four 'engths from Delwood, Calmond, Balloon King, and Doctor’s Orders. Along the back Bay Acre, going comfortably, mamtajned his lead from a bunched field, with Delwood. Balloon King. Tregilla. and Axinus prominent. Turning for home Bay Acre was just clear of Doctor’s Orders. Tregilla. Sun Lover. Veilmond. and Balloon King. Tregilla took charge at the distance, closely pressed by Veil mond. In an exciting finish Tregilla prevailed by a head. Time. 2min 33|sec.

EPSOM HANDICAP, One mile.

CATHMAR, Mr Jack King’s b h (Tipple:—-Clair Obscure), 7.12 (A. Reed) 1 HOLDFAST, 8.7 (Cook) 2 KILLARNEY, 8.6 (M'Carten) .. .. 3 Twenty-two started, including White Fang and Vali. The large field was despatched with an even start. When it settled down Mollison had charge from High Disdain. Waugoola, Credence. Holdfast, Greensea, Killarney. and Cathmar Passing the half-mile Holdfast supplanted Mollison then followed Waugoola, Cre dence, and Cleave. Holdfast led into the straight a length clear of Mollison, Waugoola, Gay Ballerina, Cathmar, and Cre dence. Mollison challenged Holdfast at the distance, but the latter shook him off, and was only beaten in the final strides by Cathmar, who came with a brilliant finishing run and gained the ver diet by half a neck. for two furlongs Phar Lap established a three lengths’ lead. Thereafter the race resolved itaelf into a procession, Phar Lap winning with his ears pricked by two lengths. Time, 2min 33isee. KENSINGTON HANDICAP.—Second division: King’s Arms, 8.9 (Cook), 1; First Acre, 10.3 (Webster), 2; Magnetic, 9.9 (M'Carten), 3. -Thirteen started: Roseal was smartest to move from Chemosh, Starlike, and Gold Miner. King’s Arms took command at the distance, and just lasted long enough to stall off a late challenge by First Acre, winning by two lengths. Time, Imin 25sec.

There was a tremendous drop in the totalisator investments of £35,602. Cathmar, the winner of the Epsom, was beaten by First Acre recently at a minor suburban meeting. His victory yesterday was a great surprise, but was distinctly popular. Pentheus twisted a plate before the start of the Epsom and slightly injured his foot. First Sight and Mollison had every chance, but faded out at seven furlongs. There was considerable interference in the Derby, and the champion, Veilmond, got the worst of the deal. Sargon was knocked back when Calmond collided with him.

The champion Phar Lap, winner of the Spring Stakes, has now earned £30.263. He ran the last six furlongs in Imin 14|sec.

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN DERBY.

ADELAIDE, October 5. The South Australia Derby resulted as follows:—lnduna, 8.10 (Slattery), 1; B.lO (Boorn), 2; Kidston, 8.5 (Adams), 3. Six started. Won by three lengths. Time.. 2min 39sec.

V.R.C. MEETING. MELBOURNE, October 5. The Victoria Racing Club held its October meeting in fine weather. Following are the results: —

STAND HANDICAP.—Liquid Cry, 7.3 (Hynes), 1; Sartaress. 7.0. 2; Kenny, 8.8, 3. Nineteen started, including Glare, Soulton. and The Guide Won by a length, with three-quarters of a length between second and third. Glare was eighth. Time, 2min 4|sec. MARIBYRNONG TRIAL STAKES (for fillies). —Seamistress, 8.7 (Hannan). 1; Gallantic. 8.7, 2; Buzzola, 8.7, 3 Twenty started. Won by a head. Time. 54Jsec OCTOBER STAKES.—Amounis, 9.0 (Bracken). 1; Rigadoon, 7.6 (Percival) 2; Carradale, 9.0 (Leigh), 3. Six started, including Wise Force, who has beaten Amounis twice in two previous races thi? year. Amounis has now won £41,894. and is only £1205 behind Gloaming’s total. A sensation was caused when it was lepoited that Wise Force appeared to have been doped. A veterinary surgeon examined the horse, and came to the conclusion that it certainly was abnormal. The jockey, Dempsey, said the horse was almost unmanageable, and was very excited. After the race the stewards inquired into the matter, and reported that the horse showed symptoms of alkaloid poisoning. The case has been adjourned for investigation. Amounis won the race by a length, with five lengths between second and third. Time, Imin 37Jsec. Amounis ran the last half-mile in 47sec.

..£W ZEALAND HORSES RETURNING. MELBOURNE. October 5. ihe New Zealand trainer F. W. Ellis is sending Cough and Red Sea back to the Dominion by the first available steamer. Ellis is returning after the Caulfield Cup. Cough won a small race at Geelong.
