OPENING OF THE CAMPAIGN. ADDRESS BY’ REFORM CANDIDATE, WAIPUKURAU, September 22. A large and enthusiastic audience assembled in the Municipal Theatre tonight to hear Mr William Tucker, tha Reform candidate for the Waipawa- byielection, make his first public appearance before a Waipukurau audience. Mr R. l M‘Lean, the Mayor, presided. Mr Tucker was supported by Mr A. M. Samuel, Mr David Jones, and Mr H. M. Campbel], M.P.’s. The meeting opened with a vote of'condolence with the widow and family of Sir George Hunter. Mr Tucker, who was accorded a rousing reception, said that Mr Massey had served New Zealand as a trusted, tried, and faithful Prime Minister. He eulogised Mr Coates as the best man in the Dominion to-day to lead a . Government,' and paid a tribute to Mr W. Downia Stewart as a Finance. Minister. The speaker dwelt on the tapering off of the borrowing policy by the Reform Government and made a comparison with the United Party. The 1928 election, he said, was largely, between a policy of increasing and one of decreasing the rate of borrowing,. He was satisfied, that the people of Nw Zealand now realised , their mistake. Speaking on the United Party’s 1928 manifesto he. said that were the consequences of an aftermath not so terrible . the ridiculous assertions and promises would be laughable. In connection with the railways, Mr Tucker said .it was desirable that the service should be put under directors instead of political control.' To make the railways pay it:was necessary to obtain co-ordina-tion with motor, transport. Dealing with land settlement Mr Tucker said he did not, favour settling improved estates, but fie agreed with Reform’s group system; He thought Crown lands settlement should receive greater consideration by putting settlers in with cheaply advanced money. In conclusion, the speaker made a plea for support for his party. .. After short addresses by the members of Parliament, present votes of thanks and confidence were carried by acclamation. •
