RED POLL CATTLE IN NEW ZEALAND.

This breed is becoming increasingly popular amongst discriminating and progtessive farmers, not only in New Zealand, but all over the world. Red Polls yield even quantities of high quality milk (of the best quality for cheese and butter making) throughout an exceptionally long lactation period, which, of course, is preferable to big flushes for short periods. Large run holders, mixed farmers, and dairy farmers alike are paying increasingly marked attention to this breed. Runholders, because they cross so extremely well with Shorthorns and Hereford run cattle, make the best of mothers, pioviding for their calves under the most trying conditions, and out on the run give a big percentage of calves and are wonderfully tractable cattle to handle. On the second and third-class soil conditions of New Zealand they are invaluable, and repeatedly produce a better season’s butter-fat average than any of the onepurpose milking breeds, and at the same time their progeny make most successful foragers under the hardest conditions. They are a very prepotent breed; 90 per cent, hornless and all-red calves are the average result of mating a well-bred Red Poll bull to crossbred cattle of any cross. As vealers no breed can surpass them, and as such they are firmly sought after by butchers. A very good entry of cattle of splendid type (both male and female), is assured for the third National Red Poll sale to be held on October 4 on the Manawatu A. and P. show grounds in Palmerston North.
