SALE OF CRUTCHINGS.

JAPAN THE PRINCIPAL BUYER. CHRISTCHURCH, August 30. Japan was the principal buyer at a sale of crutchings conducted this afternoon by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association. There was a good bench of buyers, but bidding was very lifeless, ■and'prices fell by-2d ■ to - 3d bri vious'sale ’ about three months ago. Continental firms were represented, but-New Zealand mills did not-buy ffiifcb, although when the lots suited they took’'part in the bidding. ’ • •<■-'- . « •■•■' . - The class of crutchings’ goffered was better at this sale than at the -last, being 'mostly ewe/ as ' coropared • with' -hogget. Practically no fleece was offered, .and odd flofs of straggler - wool sold ; fdirly well.-

Although prices were down, they were still ahead of those realised at the corresponding sale last year. Many of the buyers were evidently present just to see what the prices would be, and left without opening their catalogue. Passings were quite 25 per cent, of what was offered, and only one super lot of very light crutchings nearly touched the Mayprices. While the top price was 16Jd for halfbred; very few- bales of this quality -brought more than 144 d. The range for halfbred crutchings was lid to 15d, with lower stuff at 91d to lid. Crossbred and three-quarterbred brought lOd to 12Jd,. and other sorts 8d to.lOd. Very little merino was forward, and the offerings realised 13d to 15d. > ; eedy crutchings were worth 7d to 9d. The total offerings were 2267 bales.
