MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING; The monthly meeting of the Bruce County Council was held on Tuesday, when there were present: C’rs W. J. Sheat (in the chair), H. M. Driver, J. Lockhart, D. M'Gregor, T. Johnston, A. Renton, A. King, D. Gardyne, V. Wilson, and W, Bell. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr J. E. Carvalho wrote requesting permission to erect a Bowser petrol pump on the kerb of the footpath adjoining his property at Waihola.—Decided to grant the application subject to the by-laws being conformed with. Mr W. E. Morgan wrote complaining of the stare of the road leading to his property at “Viewmont,” Waronui. and asked that the council proceed with repairs to it. The writer also offered to assist the council in the work. —Agreed that ..the application ho granted on tho terms set forth in Mr Morgan’s letter. HIGHWAY MATTERS. A letter was received from the chairman No. 17, District High ways Council, drawing attention to the particularly-bad state of section of the highway from the Taieri County boundary to Clarendon, and asking what steps were being taken to havo the potholes attended to. The writer stressed the fact that the Main Highway Board’s subsidy was payable only on condition that sections of the highway were' satisfactorily maintained, and pointed out that as the board was now contributing the major part of the maintenance money it was provable that any further subsidy -should be withheld until this section of the highway was brought up to a satisfactory state.—Received. The Chairman of No. 17 District Highways Council forwarded a circular issued by the Main Highways Board in regard to excessive and dangerous speeding on tho roads by motor vehicles, particularly service cars on the main highways. Attention was specially drawn to the manner in which motor vehicles were driven past workmen engaged in road operations.— Received. INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The inspector reported as follows on tho work done during the month on the various roads uder the county’s control:— Balmoral No. 2 Riding.—Grading has been done on the following roads:—Wallace’s road, Clarkson’s to Cuttance’s, and M'Culloeh’s road. Mr M'Culloch has dono a considerable amount of free grading on the road leading into his property, and will also put in the necessary culverts.— A culvert of 3ft concrete pipes has been, put in at Blackburn to replace a wooden culvert which had collapsed. Inch Clutha Riding.—Six teams have been employed m gravelling about 30 chains at the top-end of Centre road. Kaitangata Riding.—Shagree Creek bridge has-fceen completed. Waihola Riding.—A small bridge on tho Waihola-Taieri Beach road has been redecked. —The contractors have made a start with the erection of Morgan’s bridge. —Mr Knarston has given a small portion of land opposite Mr Brugh’s cottage for road widening purposes, and this has been surveyed. Tho creek on Narrowdale road has been cleaned, straightened, and tho road raised; a Sin pipe culvert has also been replaced by 'one of 2ft concrete pipes. Clarendon Riding.—Twenty yards of Manuka Creek gravel have been spread on M'Grouther’s rcTad.

Toko. Riding.—The settlers . interested have filled up the approaches to the small bridge at Hassett’s ford. All work in this connection has been done free of charge.—One‘culvert of 9in-pipes has been put in on the Moneymore School road, also one pipes on Allison’s road, and the low places in the formation have been filled with clay. Mount Stuart Riding.—Water tables havo been cleaned out and the high sides taken off portion of the Hillend-Mount Stuart road with the-grader and tractor. Gravelling has been done on the Adam’s Flat road. Several settlers have given one week each free horse-work and others one week each free labour. —Gravel has been loosened up for gravelling on the Table Hill road. MAIN HIGHWAYS. Dtlnedin to Invercargill.—One thousand yards of Manuka Creek gravel have been spread on the road between Clarendon and Waihola. The surfaceman employed spreading gravel was struck on the leg by a passing motor car and knocked over, but was not seriously hurt. Clarkesville to Springvale.—The gravelling contract between Round Hill and Manuka Creek has been completed, 1505 yards of gravel being used for this work. Twenty-eight men have been employed on Highways during the month,'and havo worked a total of 503 days. _ . In moving the adoption of the inspector’s report, Cr M'Gregor suggested that a letter of thanks should be sent to tho settlers in Toko. Riding who had filled up the approaches to the bridge at Hassett’s Ford gratuitously. “This,” said Cr M'Gregor, “is very praiseworthy, and quite different to tho blatant clamour of the motorists.” Cr M'Gregor’s last remark drew from Cr Driver the comment that it had spoiled the whole suggestion. It was agreed that the letter be sent, and the report adopted. GENERAJx. The Ranger reported that 14 head of flock had been impounded during tho month. Accounts amounting to £2411 Is 7fl wero passed for payment.
