An accident of an unusual nature occurred on the Turanganui River, as a result of which an amateur oarsman received a bad wound from a heavy fishhook, which became embedded in his thumb. The victim of the accident was a member of a .crew training for the forthcoming regatta races at Wairoa (says the Poverty Bay Herald), and in endeavouring to clear a fishing line which fell across the back of a fellow-oarsman, encountered the hook, which penetrated his thumb. The boat being on the move, a considerable amount of . weight was thrown on the line, which was secured at the shore end, and the result was a bad wound inflicted in the thumb of the oarsman, to whom medical aid was called without delay. It is estimated that the annual loss to Britain by the depredations of rats exceeds £55,000,000.
