KILLOCHRA REACHES SYDNEY. SYDNEY, July 22. The racehorse Killochra, in charge of the jockey Bagbv, arrived by the Maheno in good condition. DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB. QUESTION OF TAXATION. The annual meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club was held in the club’s rooms on Tuesday, the president (Mu A. C. Hanlon) presiding over a large attendance. An apology for absence was received from Mr James Smith. In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, the President stated that it would have been noticed that the club had sustained a loss on the year’s operations of £26. This was due to the fact that the stakeß had been reduced by £2550, while the investments fell off to the extent cf £5992 10s. Nevertheless, he thought that the club was to be congratulated on the results, and he could say the year had been marked by clean racing. The real cause of the loss had been the heavy taxation imposed by the Government. It was impossible for the club to survive if this taxation were not reduced. They had had good raxes, the attendance had been excellent, the totalisator returns had been good, but still they could not get ahead of things. The grounds and buildings required attention, but the club was not in a position to spend money, as taxation was xilling it. The speaker referred to the death of the jockey, Mr T. W. O’Connell, and stated that it was the first fatal accident that had occurred on the Wingatui racecourse. He was sure all members regretted this sad fatality, but the club had done all it could for the widow. The sum of £624 3s had been raised, and the public was to be congratulated upon the excellent support given to assist the cause. Mr Hanlon then moved the adoption of the report and balance sheet. Dr A. J. Hall, who seconded the motion, stated that the work of members of the committee had increased considerably since the early clays of racing. He thought now, however, that they had reached the turning point, that was if they could believe what the politicians had told them. With reference to the agitation against racing, he would like to say that the element of gambling should be dissociated from the sport. Gambling, if it had to be termed that, was only incidental to the sport of racing. When it was considered that thousands of people attended the races, it was to be wondered who was condemning the sport. Racing, in his opinion, was a thoroughly interesting sport, and was kept as clean as possible by those who ran things. Mr E. H. Lough, speaking in support of the motion, said the balance sheet showed a loss of only £26, which was comparatively satisfactory. He said this because it was to be remembered that many other clubs in the dominion had been taxed out of existence. He thought the public should be congratulated on putting up with the conditions ruling at Wingatui, but this had to be because of the lack of money. With regard to the reduction of the stake money, the speaker said the committee had reduced the amount with the greatest reluctance. Dealing next with taxation, Mr Lough said last year the club collected £21,000 from the public, and handed it to the Government. He asked if any other sporting body had to pay so much or were so overtaxed for the privilege of enjoying its sport. They were sportsmen, and were the last to grumble, and did not object to paying a fair share of the taxation, but he thought the taxation they were paying was over the odds.” Mr A. H. Fisher said they were interested in what Mr Lough had said, but he would like to know something of the policy of the club. He thought things would be better :f the ciuib adopted a progressive policy instead of always talking of being •• down and out.” The club should look on the bright side, be less pessimistic, and not always talking of taxation. He hoped the club would not adopt a retrograde step, but that it would see that improvements were made at Wingatui, instead of allowing things to drift. Mr W. R. Gordon said the public contributed £21,000, and lie would like to know in what way this affected the finances of the club. Mr Lough (treasurer) said be did not know how to answer that question, and mentioned that either Mr Gordon or he was stupid. Mr Gordon : It seems to me that the club first passed this on to the public, and still it goes on. What is the reason? Mr R. S. Black said-, it was quite possible that both the last speakers were stupid. He could not understand what had been said, and, in fact, had been “bamboozled” by both speakers. He would like to know, in the first place, how much the club received for running the totalisator. Mr Lough said the club took 7j per cent, from the totalisator receipts. Mr B. S. Irwin at this stage rose and stated that the club gave the Government 24 per cent, from the totalisator receipts, and this had not been altered for the past 15 years. The dividend tax was 5 per cent., the winners’ tax amounted to 5 per cent, although it had been 10 per cent., and then there was the amusement tax and the tux on receipts. He further explained that it was the public who were suffering as far as taxation was concerned, and it was nonsense to say in the dii'ect eense that the club was suffering over it. He would say the public was being exploited by the Government, and consequently the club suffered. The motion was then put and carried unanimously. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: —I-resident, Mr A, C. Hanlon (re-elected unopposed); vice-presi-dent, Mr L. C. Hazlett (re-elected unopposed); committee—Dr A. J. Hall 255 votes, Mr A. B. Armour 237, Mr B. S. Irwin 211, Mr A. H. Fisher 210 (elected), Mr T. Elliott

186, Mr J. Gow 162, Mr W. Gardiner 91; auditor, Mr J. M. Mac Lean. The following notices of motion in the name of the president were carried without discussion: Rule 36: “The committee shall hare power to enter into contracts on behalf of the club as they may think 'it advisable, and shall at all times dispose of the funds as they may deem best for the carrying out of the objects of the club.” “That the following new rule be added as 36a: —'No member shall derive any pecuniary gain within the meaning of The Incorporated Societies’ Act, 1908, from the property or operations of the club. In the event of the winding-up or intended winding-up of the club or its dissolution by any means whatever, the funds, property, and assets of the club shall he dealt with and disposed of .n such manner for the purposes of horse racing or sport as the New Zealand Rac ng Conference shall from time to time resolve or decide. Provided that no member of the club or representative to such conference shall receive or participate in any direct personal benefit therefrom, but the fact that he derives from the club pecuniary gain by way of salary as the servant or officer o f tho club, or derives pecuniary gain to which he would be equally entitled if he were not a member of the club, shall not be deemed personal benefit under this clause.’ ” The following notice of motion in the name of Mr A. H. Figher was carried by 39 votes to 18: —“That the words in parentheses in the following rule be struck out:—Rule 24: any member leave uncancelled upon nis voting paper in respect to any office the names of more (or fewer) persons than there are vacancies to be filled, then his vote in respect of the election for such office shall be invalid.’ ” The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair
