RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

WAIMATE HUNT CLUB. The Waimate Hunt Club held Us annual race meeting on the 24th inst. in tine weather, and there was a fairly large attendance. The track was very firm for the time of the year, and, in fact, was so hard as temporarily to knock out of action some of the unsound brigade which faced the starter. W. Feilding broke a small bone in one of his legs when Kismet fell with him in the Bluecliffs Steeples, but the others who were unshipped escaped serious injury. The tVaimate Steeplechase provided an excellent finish between tile three horses winch completed the course, and they were in close line as they flashed past the post. Sherlock hit the hencoop five furlongs from home, and thus placed an extra handicap on his chance. Master Peter was kept fairly busy under his big weight, and ran an excellent race. Aurore was finishing better than the others, and if more use had been made of him earlier in the race he might have won. Clontarf won all the way in the Waihao Hack Handicap, in which King Sol could not pace it with Ihem in the early stages. The Hunt Cup Steeplechase was a chapter of accidents. In the Morven Welter Handicap Happy Warrior settled his chance by bolting once round when doing his preliminary. King Sol was first out, and as Radial and Carmine were both sore, he had a much mono cosy task than appeared the case on paper. During the day £6106 10s went through the totalisator, compared with £5112 10s last year. Mr W. B. Freeman got his fields away from a fair line. An inquiry was held into a case of boring in the Bluecliffs Steeplechase, but beyond considering the matter no further action was taken. Crossing the stand hurdle Agnola, Pomposa, and Strathglass were running in line in front of Hiero and Likelihood. Strathglass dropped back. Going along the back Agnola and Pomposo were showing the way to Hiero and Likelihood. Agnola and Pomposo drew out as they came to the straight, where the former came on and won well by over a length from Pomposo, which beat Ileiro by two lengths. Likelihood was four lengths away, followed by Mandrake. Time, Bmin 4sec. BLUECLIFFS HUNTERS’ STEEPLES, Of 75sovs. About two miles and a-quarter. 2Mr R. A. O’Connell) 3 Also started: 4 Purple Chiel 9.13, 1 Kismet 9.13. Kismet and Purple Chiel fell at the first jump, and Six Cylinder led Pukaki Maid over the stand dou'ble, with Grey Star close up. Six Cylinder continued to show the way, and Pukaki Maid came down at the hencoop. The other two rose at the last jump together, and in a fighting finish Grey Star beat Six Cylinder by a neck. Pukaki Maid was remounted by a bystander and finished the course. Time, 4min 37sec. •WAIMATE STEEPLECHASE, Of 130SOVS. About two miles and a-half. 2—Mr J. Talbot’s b g Master Peter, by St Petersburg—Deerstalker mare, aged, 12.3 (F. Johnston) 1 I—Mr J. M’Donald’s Sherlock, 10.1 (J. R. Kaan) 2 4Mr Divan’s Aurore, 9.0 (Humphreys) 3 Also started: 3 Paul Pry 10.9. Paul Pry ran off at the second jump, and Sherlock led over the stand double. Master Peter then ran up to dispute the leadership aud outjumped Sherlock each time at the double. Sherlock struck tho hencoop, five furlongs from home, and lost over three lengths. However, he closed on Master Peter at the last jump, and Aurore also put in a claim. A good finish home saw Master Peter beat Sherlock by a neck, whilst Aurore was a similar distance away. Proliliman led out from Clontarf, who was followed by Rockfellow 7 and Red Cherry, with King "Sol further back. Clontarf came away at the home turn and won by over three lengths from Rockfellow, who. beat King Sol by a head. Sunny Mac was another head away fourth. Tilson) 3 Also started: 4 Happy Mac 10.3, 1 Don Francisco 10.2, 2 Kismet 9.13. Kismet ran inside a flag after jumping the first fence, and Happy Mac and Don Francisco ran off at the next jump. Six Cylinder and Grey Star went on together in front of Pukaki Maid. Grey Star came down at Dio hencoop on the last time round, and Six Cylinder won by over half a furlong. Grey Star finished the course. Don Francisco went back, but broke down after crossing the stand double. Time, Smin 19seo.
