“Daniel Richard Cooper, missionary. Main street, Gore,” is the description published in a 1917 directory of the man later destined to be sentenced to death after one of New Zealand s most sensational murder trials. During April mortgages totalling £95,021 were registered in Taranaki while those discharged totalled £114,530. Over the dominion as a whole the new registrations totalled £2,062,947, and the discharges £1,466,368. Except Nelson, Taranaki was the only district which reduced its mortages during the month.
