OAMAKU .UAKALIsj. (Fkom Oub Own O-respondent.) OAMAKU. June 16. The greater part of the business done in the stock market during the week has been under the hammer. There was a particularly large yarding of fat eheep and lambs at the regular market; and a good sale wa3 recorded, prices in some instances showing an advance. Lamb made from 9od to K*i<l par lb, according to quality. The range of prices was as follows: —Extra prime lambs, 395; prime lambs, 36s 6d to 353 9i; medium lambs, 27a 6:1 to 395; light-weight lambs, 26s to 275; extra prime ewes, 24s 6d; prime ewes, 21s 6d to 235; medium ewes, 18s to 20s. The offering of store sheep was small, and the market showed an upward tendency. A couple of lines of mixed two, four, six, and eight-tooth crossbred ewes, in lamli. realised 31s and 33s respectively,, and other sales effected were as follows: Aged ewes, 17s 6d to 21s 6d; ewe lambs, 27s 4d; store lambs, 22s to 255. The prices realised for fat lambs at this sale were conlirmed at Duntroon on the following day, when extra prime again reached 395; while prime brought from 233 6d to 313 6d; and medium from 27s to 28s 6d. The only other noteworthy point at thi3 country sale was that mixed-sex hoggets sold at from 22s 6d for passable quality up to 30s Gd for a highly desirable line. Sales by private treaty have included the following:—Mixed four, six, and eight-tooth ewes, in lamb, 355; sound-mouthed ewes, in lamb, 32s and 335; fun -r.d failing-mouthed ewes, in lamb, 21s to , store wethers, 225; store wether lamoj, iu a line of over 800. 16s 6d; hoggets, 235; fat wethers, 30s; fat ewes, 23s to 255. The main feature of the weekly sale so far as cattle were concerned was found in the fat pens, which were mort than usually well filled. The best of the bullocks brought from £8 10s to. £lO 7s 6d, and others from £6 5s to £7 ss; while cows went at from £2 15s to £3 15s. Sales of cattle by private treaty have covered a large number, mainly because of the sale of big lines of old cows and vealers destined for the south. The prices given for these lines were from £1 10s t-o £2 for the cows, and from £1 5s to £1 12b Gd for the vealers. Other sales have been as follows:—Fat bullocks, in a small line, £7 ss; three-year-old steers, £5 to £5 10s; two-year-old steers, £2; mix<ki-sex yearlings, 255; calves, 15s. At auction heifers just at profit realised £6 15s. Dairy s ock, to calve in the spring, does not enjoy the same favour, cows under competition having been &old at from £i 7s 6d to £4 15s. Campbell) has received the following cable message from London in respect of the New Zealand fruit which arrived in London by the Port Napier:—“Fruit ex s.s. Port Napier is being discharged in excellent condition, and is meeting with a good demand, realising: Stunners. 16s to 18s 6d per case; Jonathans, Statesmen, e-nd Rome Beauty, 15s; Stark, 14s; Cleopatra and Delicious, 16s; Dunn’s Favourite, 15s to 16s; London Pippin, 14s to 15s. Australian prices averaged 2s less than New Zealand for similar varieties. Recent arrivals of Australian fruit have not been so large as was anticipated, with the result that prices are a little harder.” The prices quoted are the most favourable received for New Zealand fruit this season, and they are weil above the average for shipments. Exclusive of the Eemuera shipment, which landed in bad condition, prices for the season have averaged approximately 12s to 14s per case. There are still two or three boats on the water due to reach London in the course of the next three or four weeks. PRICE OF CHEESE. SHORTAGE IN CANADA. WELLINGTON, June 14. The Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture lias received cabled advice indicating that production of cheese in Canada is thus far this season, some 9 per cent, behind that of the corresponding period of 1922. It is noted that the High Commissioner’s cable of May 26 indicated the price of New Zealand cheese at 843 to 86s, while this week’s shows the price at 88s to 925. It seems probable that the shortage of supply from Canada may be having a firming influence on prices.
