SHEEP DOG NOTES.

Ry

Terror.

The third annual trials of the Albany Collie Club were held recently on Messrs Fraser Bros, property “The Brothers.” and proved by far the most popular in regard to number of spectators and competitors, the latter coming from as far afield as Southland. The weather was fine though the ground w as wet after roc. nfc rains, but this did not deter enthusiasts from being present till tho close of tho third day. Owing to the large number of entries, it has been found necessary to run two events at once, which requires (.he services of two judges, and tho grounds are close enough for spectators to view both competitions, but at sufficient distance to make no difference to men working dogs. The Heading events and Huntaway aro run on an open face covered with light tussock and free from flax, bush, or deep gullies, and the many unnecessary obstacles on a 161 of trial grounds. No doubt the equal chance and sporty run every competition has. is in a largo measure responsible for the return of competitors and the larger entries each year. The Farmers’ and Ladies' Classes are held in a level paddock with conditions as nearly as possible to ordinary farm work. The judges, Messrs Elliott and Hogg, had not such a difficult task as on previous years, the work, with (he exception, of the winning runs being hardly up to the usual standard; however, their verdicts met with general approval. Tho prize money is about £IOO of club's money and approximately another £SO in specials, medals, and trophies, including four very valuable challenge cups, and the prospects for the future aro even brighter. The club’s sound financial position is mainly duo to the generosity of local r unholders, who have supjplied sheep gratis on every occasion. 'J bis year the sheep were the property of Mr F. F. Neil, of Albury Park, and they could not have been improved on. The ball on the first evening of the trials (at whioh outside competitors are the guests of the

club) completely eclipsed all similar functions. Local ladies, under the guidance of Mrs F. Hogg, voluntarily attended to the catering on ground, anil left nothing to be desired. The following are the results: Class I. —Long Pull; 49 entries; 50 points.—E. M'Lennan’s Moss, 43 . points, 1; J. Davison’s Joe, 42, 2; T. Scale’s Scot, 41, 3; J. Trotter’s Cap, 37, 4.
