HENLEY.

June 9.—Unless some outside assistance is forthcoming to help us with the drainage question here, there is a possibility cf tun district going back to a state it was 70 years ago —flax, Maori heads, etc. The only thing different w-ill he that we will still have decent roads from which can he seen t-'-o deserted farms that once were fertile homesteads. Fire. —Our hotel here had a close call from being burnt down the other night. The garage alongside was completely destroyed, but through the efforts of a willing hand of helpers the main building was saved. As it is, the loss is a severe one, as the generating plant for lighting and pumping were housed in the building and destroyed. The proprietor (Mr Jas Gillespie) was severely burned in getting out of the burning building, and much sympathy is felt for him in his severe loss and affliction. , Personal Mr and Mrs D. Dawson, ot tue Native Eaik, have left here to take up farming at Hunt’s Road, and we all wish them good luck in their new venture.
