j ul . e 9 —At a meeting of citizens, presided over bv the Rav. W. P. Rankin, serious objection was taken to a band rotunda oil the memorial site, and it was eventually decided to build a band practice room. Presentation. —Mr Luke, who has taken up the position of headmaster of the Cromwell School, before leaving Lowbum Ferry, was presented with a travelling rug by the chairman of the Ferry School Committee, who, m doing so, expressed his own and the regrets cf parents at losing his services as a teacher. The presentation was suitably acknowledged by Mr Luke, who thanked the school committee and parents for the support he had received. Social. —A successful social was held m connection with the Methodist Church here, the home missionary (Mr M'Gregor) presiding. An enjoyable programme was much appreciated by the audience. Mining. —The advent of winter has put a stop to operations on the Nevis field, and all the claims have washed up for the season. As has been previously announced, the shareholders of the. Rise and Shine Gold Dredging Co. have re solved to go into voluntary liquidation. The dredge won 53,7420 z of gold, valued at £210,667, oi which £53,700 or £4 9s 8d per share had been paid in dividends. By reason of the Government embargo on the export ox gold the company had lost £2OOO in 10 months; the embargo had killed goldmining in Otago. Land Questions.— Supported by numerous meetings and petitions, Mr Jas. Horn, M.P., has been in constant touch with the Minister of Lands, ar.d has now received a fairly comprehensive reply to representation which gives hope of closer settlement in the. district. It is hoped to take an area from Run 330 a. This area, together with all available Crown lands in the vicinity of Bannockburn township, will bo surveyed and placed on the market at the earliest opportunity. Mount. Pisa run will be subdivided into a 3 small blocks as possible compatible with successiu' occupation. The subdivisions will be placed on the market as soon as possible, probably with possession after next shearing. The question of granting 1-2 months’ remission of rent will be considered by the Government prior to placing the land on the market. It is proposed to amend Section 14 of the Land Laws Amendment Act, 1921-22, by adding a. proviso empowering land boards to ascertain if a run is suitable for subdivision, or if any

portion of a run is suitable for settlement or required for additions to small adjoining holdings, before an extension of the lease is granted. Football.—Cromwell team, after a very hard-fought game, beat Tairas by 12 points to S. Taxras put up their best game this season,- The game was witnessed by a large gathering. Golf.—The monthly medal was played off last week and won by J. R. Webb. Cromwell players visited Pembroke for a friendly game on June 4, and the game was much enjoyed by the local players.
