BLAZE AT GREYMOUTH. GREYMOUTH. January 29. At about 2 a.in. to-day a fire, the origin of which is unknown, destroyed the 12roomed residence of Mr Robert. Alison, Smith street. The brigade saved an adjoining billiard room. The damage is estimated at £3OOO. A valuable china collection was lost. The insurances on the contents are: In the Australian Provincial Association, £433; in the Eagle, Star, and British Dominion Insurance Company, £850; on the building, £720 in the State office and £l3O in the Atlas Company. DAIRY FACTORY DEMOLISHED. HAWERA, January 29. Early yesterday morning an outbreak of fire destroyed the Pihama Dairy Factory and a considerable quantity of cheese. Arrangements have been made with neighbouring factories to enable the milk supplies to be handled. The cause of the fire is unknown. TWENTY-FIVE CARS LOST. INVERCARGILL, January 30. A destructive fire occurred at Winton at 1 o’clock this morning, when Raines and Kincaid’s motor garage was completely destroyed, and also 25 motor cars, several of them being new and the others belonging to private owners. l’he cars were valued at £BOOO and the building at £2OOO. The insurances are: On the building, £SOO in the Commercial Onion Office; on the stock, £I3OO in the Queensland Office. Several of the private cars were uninsured. OUTBREAKS AT GREYMOUTH. GREYMOUTH, January 30. A fire, supposed to have been caused by the backfiring of an engirfe into some oil. and the bursting of a meter, destroyed the municipal pumping station last night, xhere were no insurances. small outbreak at about 3 o’clock this morning in the storeroom of Messrs Armstrong and -couglas, grocers, damaged the stock and building. OUTBREAK PROMPTLY SUBDUED. AUCKLAND. January 31 A fire occurred shortly after 4 p.m. yesterday on the steamer Makura. berthed at the Queen’s wharf. The galley range is fed with oil fuel, which caught fire and filled the galley with flames. The outbreak was subdued in about 10 minutes, but. so fierce was the heat that one of the iron bulkhead plates buckled. Some of the galley fittings were damaged. The flames were extinguished by the chemical extinguishers and water from the ship’s hose.
