AUCKLAND TOPICS.

DIGGER.]

[By

The Takapuna Jockey Club’s Summer meeting was a pronounced success. During the two days the totalisator handled £126.241, which represented an increase of £13,658 on last year’s figures. Those who tried to pick winners were set a severe task. The successes registered by the favourites were one win and two dead heats for first place. , The principal event, the Takapuna Cup, attracted a field of 11, Royal Box being picked out as the one most likely to score, with Refinement a good second fancy. Refinement, who drew the rails, was first to show out from a good despatch; but Loyal Irish soon took charge, and piloted the field past the stand the first time, just in front of Refinement and Bitholia, with Tinohoro and Boomerday next, the iast pair being Royal Box and Ganowindra. Going out of the straight Boomerday ran through on tbe rails, and showed the way up the back; but half a mile from home Loyal Irish was in charge, while Stork had run up second and Glen Canny third, the rest being well up. Coming into the straight Loyal Irish had a slight advantage of Stork, but. the latter had his rival's measure at the distance, when Glen Canny put in his claim, and, finishing up his task in good style, won by a length

from Stork, with Loyal Irish a couple of lengths away third and Royal Box fourth, lhe going suited Glen Canny, who has always shown a liking for a soft, track. Stork ran a good race, aiid would probably have given the winner more trouble if ins rider had made his run a little later. Loyal Irish -ran well, but found the distance a little too far. Though lie finished fourth, Royal Box never looked like a winner. Tactful registered an attractive performance in the Stewards’ Handicap. Golden Bubble and Lady Ridicule came into the straight well clear, and it looked as if the pair would fight it out. when Tactful came along on the outside, winning in the easiest possible manner by two lengths. The three-year son of Lucillus and Tact may turn out a high-class sprinter. Tarleton showed good form in tho two-year-old events, running a dead heat with Bugle Note for first place on tlie opening day and scoring an easy victory on the second day. Though not in the front, rank, Mr p. L. Stead's two-year-old stays on well and should be useful next season. Forest Gold was responsible for a surprise victory in the prncpal event on the second day. He was a starter in the Oup on the opening day. but was never prominent. Finelli showed a lot of pice in. the sprint event each’ day. but failed to see it out. She should do well at the country meetings. The victory of Snake on the second day marked tlie first success of Mr R. Hannon’s colours for some time. The win was very popular, a fine round of applause greeting the horse on his icturri to the paddock. Peter Amans, who won the minor hurdle race and ran a dead heat for first place with Totara Jack on the second day, promises ro turn out a good one over hurdles. The son of St. Amans has only started four times over hurdles, his recordVlieing (wo wins, a dead heat for first, and a third. Mia. Bella scored a run awav victory in the open hurdles on the first, day. and looked like taking a prominent part on the second day when she came down at tho second to last fence. Pmchito. the runnermn to Peter Amans on the opening dav. should not, be long in getting on the winning list, Ladv Ridiclue, the popular selection in the sprint event each day. failed to make a return, running third and fourth respectively. Tho Absurd mare bos a good turn of speed, and may not be long in picking up a stake. Emerald Hill scored an overdue win in tbe Zelandea Handicap. b°ating a good field and returning a two-figure dividend. The Marble Arch gelding goes well when the going is on lhe heavv side. Surveyor ran two good races at the meeting. running fourth iu the Stewards’ 'Handicap and beating all but (tool Stimulants in the Welter. He. has onlv been in work a few weeks and mav stand a preparation. Refinement raced b°low expectations at tbe meeting. Evidently - she is feeling the effects of racing. Riia.napa was a good favourite in the Welter, but after making the pace for six furlongs tired in tb" run borne, finishing out of a place. After the meeting the Polydamon colt was purchased by Mr W. Scholium, and is Pow a member of Mr F. Loomb’s teami After tlie Pangitoto Handicap on the second day. Edwards, the rider of Marble Crag, was before the stewards for striking Anderson, the rider of The Onrragh, with his whip after the horses nulled up. The offence being proved, Edwards was disqualified for six months. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. FORBURY PARK MEETING. Fiest Day.—Saturday, February 3. Despite the fact that, the weather was not particularly inviting, the opening card for the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting attracted one of the largest attendances ever seen on the course. Heavy showers set in during the morning and a boisterous wind sprang up, but during the progress of the racing only mild rain fell and was not serious enough to mar the pleasure of witnessing the sport. In fact, the water cart was in evidence during the latter part of the afternoon. A strong southerly breeze had to lie faced by the various gelds as they ran down the back stretch and did not help the horses to make fast records. The going was slow, but quite firm, apart from a slightly damp surface. Tlie card provided some interesting racing, but tlie Dunedin Cup lost some of its interest by accidents deleting Trix Pointer and Tatsy Dillon from the field at the start, ancj later Albert Cling and Vilo were put out of action. Loeanda Dillon took charge of his driver, but he. was pulled off to the qutside. r lhe winner is an Australian-bred pacer, who races without hobbles, and he practically won from end to end. Childe Pointer did appear to have a chance as they were rounding the home turn, bat never seriously threatoned danger in the run tip. the straight. Adair kept mixing, but showed a line turn of speed in patches. The strongest favourite of the day in Colene Pointer mixed up early in her race, but judging by the money which came for her she is apparently above the common run of pacers. A meeting of stewards took place after the Otago Handicap to investigate an allegation that B. Jarclen, tho driver of Nighborn, interfered with Claude Also at the home turn. The allegation was found to be quite groundless. One of the easiest wins of the day took place when Loeanda Mac shot to the front in the- last furlong of the Electric Handicap, and won easing up. The card was a financial success, as well as interesting from a sporting point of view. The fields all seemed to be fairly well set when sent away, but quite a large percentage of the horses failed to strike their gaits. The totalisator handled £36.378 10s, as compared with £34,812 lCs for the first day of the summer meeting last year. TROTTING STUD BOOK. TO THE EDITOR. Sik, —The work of compiling Volume VII of the New Zealand Trotting Stud Book is now in hand, and I wish to make use of your usual generosity in apprising owners and breeders of the fact that entriei of brood mares and their progeny are being received. Prior to the last issue of this valuable work, almost any horse of the light harness breed was eligible for inclusion. Three years ago a new series of standards was set up, which confine the entrants to only those that comply with these standards. In general, the requirements are by no means _ exclusive. The most important conditions are: 1. A horse or mare imported from America, the name of which has appeared ing a previous issue of the New Zealand Stud Book, or is the progeny of such horse and mure. 2. An imported horse or mare registered as standard-bred in America. 3. A horse or mare that complies with the New Zealand standard. It is under the last-named clause that almost any well-bred New Zealand brood mare and her progeny can get in. 'ihe New Zealand qualifications are set out in detail in the Rules of Trotting, but are somewhat lengthy to encroach on your space. Any owner is not conversant with them or is uoubtful of his brood mare s qualifications for inclusion •in the btud Book, can be set right by communicating with the compiler. This, I trust, they will do, for neglect of entry must surely detract, from the value of young stock. In this respect owners have' been somewhat remiss in the past, but under the existing conditions they must recognise the fact that Btud Book stock will always he worth mare than that not included. —I am, etc., Fred. The stewards of the Australian Jockey Club inquired into the recent running of Radiant Light, and decided ‘ that, whilst the horse’s performances were inconsistent, no further action be taken. RACING STOCK. MR W. G. STEAD'S PURCHASE. LONDON. December 16. Considerable interest will be taken here in the future of Leighton, who was acquired by the British Bloodstock Agency on behalf of Mr W. G. Stead (Flaxmere, Hastings) at the Newmarket December sales. Tliia bay four-year-old is the son of Roi Herod (sire of The Tetrarch) out of Queen of the Earth (second in the Oaks, and dam of Tip-Top and St. Coe), by Flying Fox, out of Lovely (winner of the Oaks), by Hermit, out of Aanonvma, by Stockwell. Leighton thus embraces the finest blood in the country, both from his sire and his dam.

As a two-year-old Leighton won the four races in which he took part in a manner which led many to believe that he was a "horse of the century.” These races included the British Dominion Plate and Lancashire Breeders’ Produce Stakes. His three-year-old career proved disapyiointing, possibly because he was treated by the handicappers as a much better animal than he really was. He started favourite but failed to stay in the Derby won by Humorist in‘l9‘2l. He was second when he came past Tattenham, but he was knocked out of his stride in the straight by a French horse named Bohemian. He nearly brought off a great surprise iirthe Cambridgeshire. Though he had been "stopped” in his training, he was only beaten by a short head by Milenke, to *-hom he was conceding lSlb. In the Trial Stakes, Ascot, he was beaten by a short head by Plymstock. As a four-year-old he won the Non-stayers’ Plate, Ldngfield, beating The Night Patrol, was second to the Yellow Dwarf, beaten a neck in the Lingfield Park Breeders’ Stakes, second to Tetrabbazia in the Royal Stakes, Newbury, and second, beaten a neck, to Leighton Tor in the Town Moor Handicap, Doncaster. Though he had every opportunity during his four-vear-old career these were the only races he made any showing out of 16 attempts. Mr W. E. YThineray, the former owner, had intended to use Lsighton for stud purposes, but owing to ill-health Mr Whineray has had to sell all his horses. He had been offered £2OOO for Leighton by Mr J. B. Joel after the 1921 Derby. At the auctions last week, Mrs "Whitburn, the well-known owner, was another bidder, and Lord Rosebery's agent, Mr Edmonds, who wished to buy the horse for stud purposes on behalf of a leading owner in Victoria. Mr Edmondis hid up to £3OOO and Mr Stead's agents obtained the horse for £3IOO. Leighton is an excellent example of a horse which could have been sold at one time for a fortune. An offer of £20,000 for him was once refused. He will remain at Manor Farm, Broxbourne, until shipment, probably before tlie New Year. It is understood there is no intention to race him in New Zealand.
