CITY POLICE COURT.
Thursday, February 1. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) A Serious Charge.—Bertie Hedgland Parker, postmaster at Owaka, was charged on remand with carnally knowing a girl under 16 years of age at Hina Hina, near Owaka, on October 7, 1922.—Chief-detective Bishop prosecuted, and Mr A. C. Hanlon appeared for the accused.—The girl, in the course of her evidence, said the offences took place while accused was staying for the week-end at her parents’ home. She had first become friendly with him prior to this when she was boarding at Owaka, while attending school there. Accused had been unduly in” timate with her on three occasions. She was 15 years and four months old at the time.—Evidence was also given by Dr James S. Stenliouse (Owaka), Detective Palmer, and the girl's father.—Accused, who reserved his defence, was committed for trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court. Bail was allowed—self in £2OO, with one surety of £2OO.
