WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council, held on Tuesday, was attended by Crs P. Briscoe (in the chair), J. M‘Gill, G. Gilmore, C. E. Overton, E. and C. M'Lachian. ' Accounts amounting to £350 6s 9d were passed for payment. The inspector reported on the state of the roads, etc., in the different ridings, and, in accordance with his suggestion, it was decided to put six new planks in the bridge at Evansdale, to put two new beams in the bridge at Karitane, and to call tenders for the supply and delivery of ICO yards of 2J,in metal for Pryde’s road in the Merton Riding. The Valuation Departmnt wrote stating that £221 4s 8d had been remitted to the credit of the council in settlement of the subsidy due on rates collected; to June 30. —The action of the clerk in claiming that this amount was £1 15s 4d short of the amount due was approved. The secretary of the Motor Vehicle, Horse Drivers, and Stable Union wTote asking for permission to hold a bicycle race between Waitati .and Evansdale on January 27.—The opinion was expressed by. Cr Laley that there should be no races on Any public roads, and permission was refused as the council considered racing on

a public road dangerous to the travelling public. W. L. Lawson wrote .asking if it would be possible to buy a small section of the Recreation Reserve at Long Beach, Mihiwaka, for the purpose of building a small crib on it.—lt was decided to inform the writer that the reserve was not under the council’s jurisdiction for sale or lease. r lhe secretary of the Karitane Domain Board asked the council to take action with regard to the washing away by the rivet of part of the road near Air Curtis’s house. —The inspector said that the river had nothing to do with the bank breaking away. The fence had been shifted hack, and the road W’a-s still safe.—The letter was received. L. Hodgson, Purakanui, drew attention to the bad state of the road from the foot of Long Beach road out to the beach. —The matter of attending to the road was left in the hands .of the inspector.
