TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Taieri County Council was presided over by Mr j.’. Doherty (chairman). The Finance Committee reported the expenditure for January at £IBO7 Is 4d. It recommended that the schedule be approved and the accounts passed for payment. The receipts for the past nine weeks had amounted to £1549 17s Id. The bank book shewed a debit balance of £4978 12s lid Tho report was adopted. The Sanitary Inspector reported that the slaughterhouses in the county and the piggeries at Green Island were in a clean condition.—Received The ranger reported having impounded 55 cattle and 10 horses.—Received. The New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers notified that the annual meeting would lie held in Auckland early in February.—Resolved that the engineer attend. The Department, of Health forwaroed tenders for sanitary pans suitable for Brighton, and notified that the person who had intended contracting for nightsoil removal could not now undertake the work, and recommended that steps be taken to find a man able and willing to undertake the work. —Held in abeyance meantime. E. A. Adie, Brighton, applied for repairs to road from the old creamery up to he. - place.—To be attended to. M. Duffy, Brighton, applied for repairs to Young’s road, leading to his property.—lt was resolved that the noxious weeds inspector be requested to have the road cleared of gorse, and then some surfacing could be done to it. Aslin and Brown wrote on behalf of R. J. B. Runciman in regard to streets fronting sections 11, 12, and 13, block I, Brighton, and requested the council to certify. The extra strip of land gave the council an extra width of road. —Resolved that the plans be signed. F. Clapperton. Allanton, asked that the footpath from the main road down Snowdon street be gravelled.—Footpath not to be maintained, but some gravel to be spread on road. James Hamilton, Lee Creek, Outram. drew the council's attention to the bad condition of the road between the entrance co Lee Creek homestead and Miss F. M. Dow’s residence. —To he attended to when next allocation is made. The Henley Co-operative Dairy Factory Company applied for permission to renew its iron pipe line from the river to the factory at Henley.—Granted James A. Roberts applied for the erection of a bridge across the creek immediately below his homestead at Middlemarch. He would undertake to do all the necessary carting and team work free of charge. —Held over till Cr Matheson was present. T. W. Wise (Middlemarch) asked that a ditch at his verandah be piped. He would supply the pipes if the council would do the w’ork. —To be attended to. - T. W. Wise (Middlemarch) drew attention to the bad state of drains on both sides of his property.—Referred to the engineer for report. J. M. Beattie (for R. Beattie. Ngapuna) drew the council’s attention to the state of the main road for three-quarters of a mile from his entrance gate towards Ngapuna.—The writer’s offer of gravel to be accepted as men were working cn the road at present. Mary Stansfield (Mornington) asked permission to re-erect a five-roomed house on her, section adjoining the southern reservoir at Burnside. —Referred to the inspector for examination. Or Christie moved the following motion, of which he had previously given notice: “ ‘That ' the council cannot see' its way to accede to this request; but if ratepayers in Brighton district are prepared to take the steps as provided by Section 122 of the Counties Act, 1920, in regard to a separate rate, the council will do its part’ be, and is hereby rescinded.”—Carried. Cr Christie then moved that the sum of £25 be applied to improvements to the Brighton Domain. —Cr Findlay seconded. Chi a vote being taken the remainder of thq council voted against it.—Cr Blackie moved that the council regretted it could not see its way to vote aiiy sum to improvements to the domain. Cr Soott seconded and the motion was carried. The engineer was instructed to report on the necessity for repairs to the road leading to Mr M. Howell’s property in Deep Stream riding. Or Christie moved that the pumps at Allanton, near Wilkies’ be put in working order.—Agreed to. The dog tax was fixed at the same rate as last year It was decided to draw the attention of the Inspector of Noxious Weeds to the gorse' growing on Kaikorai Valley road The engineer was instructed to report on the repairs necessary to the Green Island Bush road.
