The monthly meeting was held on Thursday, when there were present: Messrs A. North (chairman), D. R. Jack, R. MTndoe, W. S. Thomson, Alex. MTntyre, Hy. Morrison. Thos Maginness. Jas. Gumming, Sim. Lawson, and A. T. Harris. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Mr J. H. Lewis) reported on work in progress or completed. FINANCE. Receipts.—Rates, £1568; motor receipts, £ls Is; dog registration, £4B 2s 6d; refunds roads and works, £22 8s 5d ; contributions, £l4 10s; grants, £437; land fund, £330 Is; subsidy on rates, £1687 10s; billiard room license, £2. Owaka, requested that the road be metalled, as it was in a very bad state.—Gr Maginness moved that a £IOO Government grant be applied for.—Agreed to. .B. B. Hislop (Tarara) informed the council that a plank on the bridge across the Piirakauiti Stream was broken and required attention.—To be attended to. H. A. Ballantine applied on behalf of rile Aurorar Creek Timber Company, Kahuika, for permission to lay a tramwav from the school to corner of road and across the Kahuika-Stuart’s road into section 1, block XV, -Rimu S.D.—Request granted, subject to usual conditions. J. Burgess (Romahapa) wrote asking for payment on the amount of dog tax that he had collected.—To be paid two-thirds of the amount, R. M'Lintock (Roseba.nk) wrote asking council to metal the road to his property, and offering to assist to the extent of £lo.’ —-Tenders to be called for the work. R. G. Wright (Puerua) wrote offering his services as dog-tax collector in the South Molyneux and Richardson Ridings.—lt was decided to appoint H. C. Chiitock as dogtax collector (at usual remuneration) for the whole of the county arid ranger at a salary of £1 per week and the fees. D. Stewart and Son (Balclutha) wrote on behalf of Messrs T. and J. M'Kie. Clinton, with reference to a notice served’ (hem to clean a drain on their farm. The writers pointed out that the drain was not under the control of the council, and suggested that council should avail themselves of the provisions relating to private drains in “The Land Drainage Act.”— Dealt with in committee. The District Engineer. New Zealand Railways, wrote stating that, he had granted permission to the Post and Telegraph Department to Cross the railway line with an underground cable at a point adjacent to the post office Owaka.; depth of cable to be 3ft below rail level.—Received. Henry A. Brough (Owaka) wrote applying for a slaughtering license.—Granted on usual conditions.

ROAD TO CLINTON. D. A. M‘Lachlan (Clinton) waited on the council, and asked that something be done to. the road leading to his property. He said a_ culvert had been put in years ago, and since then had never been attended to. There was a spring near the culvert, and when there was any rain or when the spring overflowed the water overflowed over the culvert and road, making it impossible to drive stock over it. Some repairs had been carried out. but did not prove satisfactory. A light bridge, able to carry a ton or two, and a few chains of metal at that place was required to put the road in order. —It was decided that the surfaceman attend to the matter, and repair the road as well as possible. SOCTH OTAGO HOSPITAL REPRESENTATIVE. Cr Harris expressed the opinion that the council was not sufficiently represented oil the South Otago Hospital Board, and moved that another representative of the council be appointed to the board.—Cr Maginness seconded the motion.—Cr Cumming said m support that it was desirable to have another representative on the board in view of the amount contributed in levies by the council.—The Chairman and other councillors also spoke in support of the motion, which was carried. GENERAL. Cr Lawson brought up the matter of heavy traffic on the roads. He thought the heavy traffic by-law should be brought into operation during the winter months, and he moved accordingly.—Carried It was decided that Wednesday be the half-holiday throughout the county. It was resolved that the bridge report be left, over till next morning. Cr *Maginness moved that the council revert to Friday as the meeting day, instead of Thursday.—Carried.
