WELLINGTON NOTES.

(Fbom Odr Owk Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, January 24. r Summer meeting opened on the 21st. The w racing track was in good order and some interesting racing was witnessed the Cup | being the best finish. The Auckland treble ■winner, Exploiter, was the pick tor the Jumpers’ Flat race, but he never got in with th® solid pace set by Wamba. Hyttus carried 107 i strd won well in lmin 41sec. The Emperor won the Fitzherbert Handicap all the way. Morose, who filled second place has been railed to Auckland to race at Takapnna. Hula Girl and Killashnndra, who might have won but for trying to run off the course, were next. The Emperor, ■ by Boniform—Vicereine, won recently at V 1 Southerner, Songbird, was considered unbeatable in the Anniversary Handicap. He ran a good race but was settled at the finish by The Speaker, who was conceding 101 b and put up lmin 40sec. General Advance was among the unplaced division. The Speaker won at Awapuni and ran second to Sycorax at Hastings and is evidently an improving sort. Two Southerners in The Reaver and Whipping Boy carried the money in the Apprentices Plate, but neither got in the money. Reaver ran fourth. Tribouiet (Kilbroney—Portland Lass) won well from Scion, ■whose rider lost a stirrup iron. Tribouiet won on both davs of the Marton meeting at New Year time and is evidently improving. He was formerly owned in the south. Contrary to expectations Rouen took his place in the Cup field. Ho came down about a furlong from home, but Oliver got off with a shaking. Winning Hit ran a great race considering that the light weights had the pace on all the wav. Callaghan led for most of the wav and when he cried enough Winning Hit had Sycorax and Egotism worrying him. These two were fighting it out when Insurrection dashed up and made a great finish of it. The time equalled the record put up by Maioha a year ago. Insurrection won the Nelson Cup and has been placed in the Great Autumn Handicap and Hawke’s Bay Cup

since Messrs Riddiford Brothers presented him to their trainer, J. Lowe. He has had a trip to Melbourne and Sydney and been placed in the Auckland Cup since he returned. He was ridden by the Auckland apprentice H. Wiggens for the first time. Palestiian nearly came down when Rouen fell. Silent King ran a fair race, but Bengaroop was always well back. Rational was brought down from Hawera to contest the Wellington Stakes, but got cast in his box and will not be able to run for some time. Farceur was made a better favourite than Thespian, but the latter always had it on his two-year-old opponent. He won easily and those that stuck to him got a good price. Both first and second are by Absurd. Mr George Currie was present to see them win. -Solfanello ran a great race under lOst in the Telegraph Handicap. He beat all his opponents except The Hawk, who finished in front of him in the Railway at Elierslie. Blackmail, a stable'mate cf Solfanello, ran a good race and got third. There was some bumping in the last race. Mereusonta stopped about a furlong from home and got third to Passionless and Lady Kotiripo. The two first named had to undergo an objection for bumping, but got through all right. St. Augustus fell in the straight through galloping on something else and L. M ‘Donald got off with a shaking. It is a straight course and a wide one, but it is evidently not big enough for some of the jockeys. January 27. The weather on the Monday, which was kept as the holiday, was dull, but there was a good crowd present. The longer distance in the Mungaroa Jumpers’ Flat race enabled Royal Gift, who moved short, to score a win. He was patiently ridden by H. Cairns, who was on a holiday visit, and returned to Melbourne by the Manuka yesterday. Sir R'oseberry was again second and E: plorer thud. They ran the 12 furlongs in 2min 37sec. The Speaker carried top weight ar.d ran fourth in the January Welter to Raceful, who was ridden by his trainor, J. Buchanan. The veteran rider got a round of applause when he returned to the weighing enclosure. Killashandra (Kilbroney—Symbolism) carrying Mr T. H. Lowry’s colours, won the Nursery Handicap in good style from Bumptious and Mountain Lion, who looked as if a race would improve him. His backers had to accept a very short price when he won on the last day. Angelo (Kilbroney—Angelina) made his only appearance at the meeting in the Maiden Plate, which the brother of Kilgour wop all the way. A stone rise did not stop Insurrection winning the Racing Club Handicap from Rude and Sycorax. Songbird was responsible for the pace, but did r.ot last it out. Whipping Boy, who "was unsighted in the Apprentices’ Plate on the previous day, made no race of the Douro Cup, the most valuable hack race in the Dominion, and well worth waiting for. All Cerise did best of the others. Pluto showed his best form in the Metropolitan Handicap, in which Affectation and Anomaly dead heated for second. Mantua was in the field, but found the pace too hot. Bodyguard (Boniform —Maltegarde), who is trained by the veteran Stuart for a Wellington patron, won the Camp Handicap in good style. The weather conditions on the concluding day were perfect, as can be judged by the times put up in the different events. Sir Hr"berry did not score out of his turn when he finished in front of Explorer in the Wallaceville Jumpers) Flat. In the Waterloo Stakes The Hawk galloped brilliantly, and never gave Thespian a look in, while Solfanello was beaten off. There was not much surprise when it was announced that The Hawk had put up an Australasian record. Bodyguard had to do his best to win the Melrose Handicap from Whipping, who was conceding- his opponent weight. Songbird and Kinsem were the only two that hit the front in the Summer Handicap, first one and then the other taking a hand. Songbird only got the verdict by half a head. Backers fell over each other to be on Egotism and Sycorax in the Consolation, in which they ran third and fourth. Cruoelle just won after a great go with Princess Pat. Crucelle carried the tapes all the way, and interfered with some of the others. Anomaly stripped like a fresh horse in the City Handicap, and beat all his opponents easily. Passionless, who has improved out of sight, carried top weight, and won the Kaitobe Handicap well.
