CANTERBURY DOINGS.

By

OBSERVER

The summer meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club will be held ne.\ Saturday, and it looks like being rather more interesting that usual. Acceptances arc not available yet, but the -nominations give promise of some good sport. The meeting is usually confined very largely to locally-trained horses, but this year there seems a prospect of a fair number of visiting horses taking part. Insurrection. Vagabond, Trespass, Martian Miss, Vasilkov,' Bumptious, Kil-l-ush. and Ares, are a batch of North Islanders who may compete at Riecarton before going- on to Wingatui. The South Canterbury trainer, P. T. Hogan, has some horses engaged, including Songbird, Bon-gre-oop. Liqueur, and Mandrake, while General Advance and Etta are a pair from Wingatui. in addition to these horses, who are all uncertain. 1 hear that Mr W. Stone's pair, Eleus and Silver Peak, are definitely booked for Ihe trip from Invercargill Thus, with all the best of the local

horses also engaged, there is material for ;ome fine racing. It is, however, unfortunate that the Dunedin meeting comes so quickly after our fixture, and that the weights for both of them should have been declared at the same time. ' Winning Hit is engaged iu the Midsummer Handicap and the Middle Park Plate. He has 9.9. in the former, but pro bably that will be his mission, as he has been racing over journeys lately. Ho is back from Trentham, looking in fine fettle. Palestrina shaped badly in the \1 ellington Cup. but she has been galloping well since she returned home. On Saturday she was too good over a mile and a-quarter .oi Warlove, who is not pleasing just at present. Malaga had a rest after his return irom Auckland, and on resuming work ho was found to have developed a splint, vhicn may necessitate a longer spell. Poo Chow is gradually throwing off the soreness which troubled him after racing at Auckland. He is, however, a bit backward yet. The two-year-old Prosperity is not galloping well, and it' looks doubtful if he can be at his best for some time. Triermain is an improving two-year-old, who may improve on what he shewed a-t the Dunelin Summer meeting before me season closes. , T c Moorland, ivho was purchased bv Mr tv L. Rutherford in Auckland, is a useful young galloper, and he should pay his way T 'or his new owner. Eighteenpe'uce, by Nassau —Garston, is a useful two-year-old, and in spite of Per name, which sounds cheap, she may provp a useful racing proposition. Mustard Pot has done nothing since he returned from Trentham. He may be given a rest for a few weeks. He is a doubtful, eo far as Wingatui is-concerned, The Reaver raced below expectations at Trentham. and F. D. Jones contemplates turning him out for a few months. , Tatau Tatau is galloping well on me tracks, and she should win a decent sprint rase before long. CSean Sweep is giving his trainer cause for some anxiety, and he may be treated to 6 Scrimmage was very lame when she resumed work last week, and she may not be persevered with in the meantime. Distant Shot, by Antagonist—Telescope, :s another of Cut-te Brothers’ 'lot who is under a cloud at present. . , Kilmoon is rapidly getting into racing trim, and he should win a good race very 6 °TPie two-year-old filly Veil is doing very little work, and it looks as if she was not wanted for some time. n Te Kuri and Kilroe have left K. rrett s stable, and in future they will be trained by A. Goodman at Trentham. Derrett contemplates leaving shortly on a trip -o England. In the meantime he has only Horatius and Ma Protegee in wor*. Amythae is bowling along freely m ms work. He reeled off six furlongs on Thuisday and nine furlongs on Saturday sliapmg •eallv well in each effort. With all h s weight, he will be dangerous in the Dunedin Oup. for which he can be looked on as an almost certain starter, unless something goes wrong with him. The Boniform—Peirene yearling filly, puichased by Mr G. D Greenwood in Wellington lnqf week, was brought south by -tv. » . Masoit ’when he retuvned ftom Tren.h.jn with Pluto and Farceur. Phe othei members of the team, Gloaming. Vespucci and Egotism, will go further north foi the Egmont, Taranaki, and Wanganui meeting, where theiy should get a lot. of money. On completing this circuit R. J. Mason will decide about the Sydney trip. Gloaming should be in good fettle by the time -ie gets through with t.ha North Island trip, and it would be interesting to have him take on the Australian cracks at weight tor ag There will be a strong contingent of Canterbury trotters and pacers going south this week to race at ForburyPark. The visitors, or some of them look like getting their share of monev on, the trip. Gockerill is working a couple of young horses by Nelson Bingen from Sal Tasker and Marie N a relic respectively They aie a promising pair, who should do we.l i in the season. A Cox’s three-year-old trotter NetoOti Bell is doing good work, and he should race creditably in the New Zealand T lotting Stakes at Forbury. . , , An excellent list of nominations has been received lor the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting, and with all the cracks engaged we should have some good sport.
