OBITUARY
THE LATE MR G. JOACHIM. The news that Mr George Joachim, of Mornington, passed away at midnight on the 28th will come as a shock to many of his intimate friends in . Dunedin. Many years have passed since the deceased gentleman came out from England and joined the firm of Messrs Cargill, Gibbs, and 00. in this city, but he will best be remembered for his connection with the Westport Coal Company as managing director, a position he filled from 1877 up till the day of his death. Mr Joachim was of a very retiring disposition, and took very little, if any, part in public affairs, but he always had the welfare of the city at heart. He was a man of high ideals, and was one of the most benevolent citizens of Dunedin. It was characteristic of the man that the extent of his generosity escaped public notice, because it almost invariably happened that any benevolent act of his" "was done_ anonymously. He never courted publicity, but whatever he did was done from his goodness' of heart and without ostentation. He will be missed. by many who benefited bv his kindly generosity. Mr Joachim took considerable interest in the_ Otago Art Society, and held the position of president of it till the annual meeting last year. He was also a trustee of the Art Gallery, and one of its most liberal patrons. Mrs Joachim, who died Some years ago, was.a sister of the famous artist, E. N. Wimperis. She left three children—two sons and a daughter.—but the sons predeceased their father, the last surviving son, who was_ a marine engineer, having died at sea quite recently.' The sole surviving member of the family is the daughter. The late Mr Joachim had reached the age of 77 years, and until comparatively recently had enjoyed good health.
