THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL

FAREWELL SPEECH. CHRISTCHURCH, Maroh 1. Farewell addresses and presentations to fcho Governor-General and Countess Liverpool were given at a large gathering of citizens in the City Council Chambers today. In acknowledging the gifts the Governor-General said that he had made it a practice to spend three months of every year in the South Island, and generally h 9 had endeavoured to visit every locality in the dominion, though he had been prevented from doing a great deal by the exigencies of the war. If one wished to study the interests of the community it was" essential that one should travel into every part, no matter how remote, and come into contact with all sections. New Zealand's wonderful work during the war had impressed him, and he was proud of her loyalty and unswerving devotion. He wished to add a personal word on behalf of her Excellency and himself and express their deepest and most grateful thanks for the handsome presents given them that day. The gifts would be valued highly and would at all times bring back memories of happy days spent in Christchurch. To-day was the Day of St. David, the patron saint of Wales, the country from which the heir to the throne took- his title. There was another David to whom this country could look up for her ideal. He wished New Zealand every success in the future, not forgetting the rising generation, who were following in the steps 'of their forefathers and doing what was right and best for their King and Empire.
