ALEXANDRA NOTES.

ALEXANDRA, February 5. Rain is badly wanted. It looked like a fall today, but, unfortunately, the clouds passed. The borough dam is 3ft down, and the water is being turned off at night to conserve the supply. A large portion of the stone-fruit crop has been despatched; by another week or two the main crop will be exhausted. For tho month of January (5 weeks) 274- tons of fruit left the local railway station. The largest weekly total -was last week—Bo tons. A by-election for the Borough Council was nendered necessary by the resignation of Cr W. Duncan, who has beenfrappointed editor a»d manager of the Alexandra Herald Company, and a contract existing between the council and the Herald brings him within the circle of persons prevented by law' from sitting at tho council table. 'The Dunedin "All Straights" bowlers will pay their annual visit to Alexandra on the 20th of this month. This visit isr looked forward to by the local residents generally, for the "AH Straights" give a concert in the Town Hall for the benefit of some local fund. -In bowling circles it is the event of the year. The Alexandra Bowling Club still holdo the Jolly Memorial Cup, but it is now called on to face threo challenges—the first, from Roxburgh, to be played on the local green this Saturday, and if our bowlers survive that challenge Queenstown and Cromwell are waiting to try conclusions.

The recent fatal accident in Dunedin to Mr Arthur King casts a shadow of mourning over two Alexandra homes. The unfortunate man has a brother and brother-in-law in ojir township in tho persons of Mr William King (of Manuherikia Valley) and Mr Edward Marslin (of Alexandra).
