KAITANGATA COURT.

KAITANGATA, February 8. Tho Publio Works Department has in hand the work of altering the present course of the Kaitangata lakes drainage canal. Tho deviation has been decided upon as the only feasible plan to overcome weaknesses apparent in the reconstruction of the bridge at the point where tho old lodes wero washed away during the May Hoods. The new outlet for tfoc carnal waters will bo a few chains above tho old one'. Tho work will bo started as soon as the necessary lines are pegged out. and should be completed within 12 months. The bridging will be done in reinforced concrete, with divisions to allow for three openings, each of 26 squaro feet. Up-to-date locks will bo erected to contend with tho rise and fall of the tides in tho river. It is unlikely that Kaitangata will cooperate .with the Clutha district branch of tho Returned Soldiers' Asocisation in its attempt to raise funds for the erection of a war memorial. Local feeling is more in. favour of the erection of a memorial hall

in Kaitangata, but tho scheme will probably bo held in abeyance until the end of the war. Tho Borough Council has accepted the offer of tho New Zealand Coal and Oil Company to present a soldiers' honours board to tho town, conditional upon the council having tho board placed in a Suit>ablo publio place, and adding to the list tho names of all local men who go on active service after the board has been erected. February 11. A young lady may now bo seen in oharge of a light delivery cart, driving out orders of butshgr jnoat to customers in Kaitangata. In another shop another lady has become quite expert in the use of the chopper. The Kaitangata Rifle Club completed tho second match in the third competition for the Carson Cup on Saturday- The standard of shooting Was lower than usual —-a fact which seems to apply to city and other clubs. Some riflemen are inclined to lay the blame upon the ammunition.
