SCHOOL VACATION

WEST TAIERI. The annual break-up of the West Taieri School was largely attended, notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather. Mr Sutherland (chairman of the School I Committee) presided. | A programme of action songs, tableaux, dialogues, and recitations was given by tho ■ pupils. Misses Crawford, Dow, Patrick, I and Messrs J. and: P. Bathgate also assisted! A collection in aid of the Halifax Fund I realised £1 17s 6d. ! UPPER JUNCTION. The break-up of tho Upper Junction School was attended by many_ of the I parents. The gathering was presided over ' by Mr J. Buttar (chairman of the School Committee). The teacher (Miss Dippie) had a splendid programme arranged by tho j children. The collection on behalf of tho ! Halifax Fund amounted to £2 2s 6d. On Boxing Day tho annual picnic and distribution of prizes in connection with Kahuika School was held, when closo on 100 parents and friends of the children were present on' the school ground. A very enjoyable afternoon was spent. The children had their usual running and jumping competitions. The under-mentioned were the winners of 'the various races and competitions:—Young Ladies' Race, Miss M. Hannon; . Married Ladies' Race, Mrs Hollows • Married Men's Race, Mr W. Wells; Ladies' Sawing Competition, Mrs W. Wells. During the afternoon the school prizes~were distributed. The prize-list is as follows: — Standard I —H. Baker, general improvement. Standard II —T. Burnard, first in class marks and special for spelling. Standard lII—C. Baker, general improvement. Standard IV —W. Johnson, first in class marks and specials for his'.ory and attendance; G. Baker, special for regular attendance. Standard V—A. Lee, first in class marks and special for history. Standard VI—J. Hollows, specials for arithmetic and attendance; J. Peterson, special for diligence. Ah enjoyable programme was provided by the scholars, who later presented their teacher (Mr Miller) with a safety razor. In the evening the residents of the district gathered in the local hall, where a dance was held in aid of the school funds. An excellent musical programme was supplied, and dancing was indulged in till an early hour.
