NEW STEAMSHIP (SERVICE. What promises to bo an important development in the transport service between Japan, Australia, and New Zealand is the advent of tlio Osaka Shosen Kaisha, one of the most powerful steamship companies of the East, into competition for Australian and New Zealand business. The American Trading Company of Australia,, having its head office in Sydney, is the Australian agent for the now service, and advertises that the first steamer, Nanking Maru, reached Sydney on November 22, bringing cargo for iSydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide, and also transhipment cargo for Wellington, Auckland, Napier, Gis'bornc, Christchurch, Dunelfin, and Bluff. This vessel (5100 tons) is proceeding to Port Pirie to load lead for Vladivostock. The second steamer, Chosen Maru (5100 tons), left Osaka on November 21, and after calling at Nagoya, Yokohama, Hakadote, and possibly Hongkong, is due in Sydney about December 18. This vessel will be followed by the Banyo Maru (4100 tons) in January, and the Luzon Maru (6500 tons) in February. Later on, if inducement offers, it is just possible that one or more New Zealand ports will be included in the itinerary of these vessels. The fact that the company is making the experiment with four vessels in succession is evidence of a strong determination to give development of the new service a thorough trial. During next year four newlargo liners will be launched in the yards of the Osaka Iron Works for the Osaka 'Shosen Kaisha, and these vessels will constitute an important addition to an already extensive fleet of vessels. Mr E. W. Cardale, of Wellington, represents the American Trading Company of Australia in New Zealand.
