J uly 24. —Tho weather has been very cold, with sharp frosts and sunny days. Later, rain sot in and melted tho snow. Tho river rose, but is now about its usual level. For the Front. —An enjoyable social evening in honour of four young men leaving for Trentham was held in the Coronation Hall on Friday, tho 21st inst. Mr W. Christie was chairman. Mr John Milne presented each soldier with a fountain pen and safety razor as tokens of esteem and regard from the inhabitants of tho district. Messrs Thomas, Hickey, James M‘Donald, and A. Mackio suitably replied There was great applause, and, after the singing of the National Anthem, the company sang, “For They Arc Jolly Good Fellows.” Speeches were delivered by Messrs W. Christie and A. Cameron. Mr Clark sang two patriotic songs, while Mrs Clark played the accompaniments. Mr Christie acted as M.C. in his usual excellent style. Tho musicians were Mr H. Do Laurie (piano), Mr Soper (accordion), Mr Coekrane (bagpipes). Mr Hickey provided a splendid supper. Mr D. Sproat (secretary) and his committee worked lioartily. Mr Oockburn collected over £lO at tho door, and tho sum of £5 5s 6d : was thrown on the platform.—Mr and Mrs MTvor invited friends and schoolmates of their son, Stanley MTvor, who is leaving for Trentham shortly, to a social evening at their residence on Saturday, 22nd. inst. Songs and recitations were given, and dancing and games indulged in. Mr E. Dennis, on behalf of his old schoolmates and friends, presented Mr MTvor with a set of military brushes as a token of their esteem and regard. Tho recipient suitably replied-, and, after tho singing of the National Anthem, thanks were tendered to the host and hostess. Sickness.—Mr T. Hill became seriously ill and was taken to Gore Hospital yesterday. Influenza and colds are still rife in tho district, and many are suffering from those very distressing complaints.
