Miss Tittell-Brune is appearing at the Strand Theatre in a new farce called "The •GrirtVfrom Upstairs," and it is recorded of her that she spares no effort to keep things briskly moving. She is associated -with Mr Frederick Ross and Mr Reginald (K<cn.

Liidy Islington lent her house in Chesterfield Gardens lor a very interesting entertainment organised by Lady Canard in aid of the Social Institutes Union. The stage was set up in the ballroom, and after a delightful concert conducted by Sir Thomas Beecharn, the performance followed of a much-talked-of poetical play called "The Hawk's Well." Programme sellers included the Eon. Joan DicksqnPoynder, Lady Diana Manners, Miss Elizabeth Asquith, Miss Nancy Cunard, and Mrs Lavery. Queen Alexandra was present, and others seen were : The Duchess of Rutland, Lady Gosford, the Princess of Monaco, the Ranee of Sarawak, Mrs Asquith, the Duchess of Marlborough, Lady Alastair Innes-Ker, Lady Randolph Churchill. Priscilla Lady Annosley, Lady Limerick, Lady Howard de Walden, Cora Lady Strafford, Lady Llangattcck, Lady lan Hamilton, the Baroness d'Erlanger, and many more. Miss Mignon Nevada, daughter of the famous Emma Nevada, was one of the successful singers of the afternoon. The Sellar family, who were prominent in New Zealand for their opposition to the Military Service Bill, are now faced with the same form of " tyranny" in their native land. They are living- in a small town in Essex, where Mr Sellar, sen., and one or two of the sens are at present engaged in bringing out a small publication called "Mufti." which seems to champion the rights of the subject to remain civilians. Dr James Macpherson (formerly of Dnnedin) has come to England mainly to see his daughter Mrs A. K. Watson, and it is not unlikely that he will, do some hospital work before returning to Nov/ Zealand. The voyage by tho Paparoa was not without excitement. From Montevideo to Avonmouth no navigating lights were carried, and all cabin lights had to be obscured. In spito of precautions, thero was an impression on board that the vessel was being followed by a suspicious-looking craft, and on the day before making port information by wireless reported one submarine operating 35 miles to the west and another 100 miles ahead of them. Hamilton, D.S.O. Grenadier Guards. For some time Mrs Hamilton had not enjoyed good health. She died yesterday at Sunningdale, Berks. Her parents, Mr and Mrs C. Elgar, of Featherstn, have been living in England with their daughter for some time, end intended remaining with her for the duration of the war. The funeral of the late Bight Hon. Sir John Gorst took place at Castle Combe, Wiltshire, when the principal mourners consisted of Lady Gorst, members of the family, ami one 'or two intimate friends. One 'of the wreaths was inscribed "In affectionate regard and esteem, from the Government-, people, and High Commissioner of New Zealand." Simultaneously a memorial service was held at St. Margaret's, Westminster, at which Canon Carnegie officiated. The High. Commissioner for New Zealand, was represented by Lieutenant Ely. Mr John G. Hewitt (Marlon) arrived by the Rotorua. He has come to study for the navy, and two years of his course will be 'spent at Osborne and two years at Dartmouth. He begins work early in May, and is meanwhile seeing all he can.
