SOUTHLAND STOCK MARKET. (From Oub Own Correspondent.) INVERCARUILL, June 24. Our 1 ! 1 "' the last week Lmvncss in all classes of stook has continued exceedingly good, a large number of Canterbury, as weil as Taieri. buyers operating not only in store sheep, but" also in cattle. Their purchases have' Iren fairly largo and at prices which have been somewhat firmer than the strong values ruling of late. It is a very long time since cattle and -store sheep realised snch values, end evidently, from the prices being paid,' stock must he very scarce in northern parts, and very dear also, as something over 30s lias been paid here for ewes to be shipped north. Good well-grown steers have also been keenly bid for, i'aierJ buyers purchasing a very large number at prices which a month ago would have been absolutely unobtainable. However, by the woo! returns, one saw that our provinco was carrying considerably more sheep than in any previous year, and even should a few thousand go north, given a good lambins 1 , wo should have enough to stock up for the next 12 months. Fat cattle are in good demand, freezing operators going fairly strongly, while butchers have also been operating very freely at the Wallacetown yards. This weekly sale appears as if it, will be a good one. The yardings have kept up well, and in another mouth or two, when store cattle come on to thomarket, there should be very extensive yardings at this centre. The market all over appears

quite sound, but can hardly be expected to go much nigher. Values are as follow: Fat cattle: Ox beef, 42s to 42s 6d • heifer beef, 40s to 41s; cow beef. 37s to 38s. REILLY, GILL, & CO., Auctioneers and Commission Agents, Moray place, Dunedin. NATIONAL MORTGAGE AND AGENCY COMPANY. LONDON, June 21. The National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand has declared an interim dividend of 7£ per cent. Till': MONEY MARKET. Money continues in ample supply and rates remain generally unaltered at present (says the Trade Review). Exports for May total £3,499,2C6 and imports £1,636,737, leaving a surplus of £1,862.519. What the future of the money market will be is exceedingly difficult to forecast in view of the exceptional circumstances existing and the vuriou? taxation proposals, some very <hv>sii< which .-• outlined in the Financial ] ■•••- uied to Parliament last week. Among the principal of these is a proposal to restrict interest rates and to enforce- i.he employment within the dominion

of funds, whether in the hands of the banks, companies, or private people. This proposal, in the rough state in which it is boioro us at present, savours of an attempt to control the inexorable law of supply and demand. At present the banks, as a whole, have more funds at their disposal than they can soundly and satisfactorily employ here, and it is not only sound banking policy, but practically a necessity, that the surplus should bo utilised remuneratively somewhere where it will si ill lie readily available in case of need at short notice. The effect of the proposed change m mortgage tax is liable to firm lending rates, as large lending companies will net under 5 per cent, when lending at 6 per cent., and that leaves little margin over the 4£ per cent, free of tax which is being paid on Government loans, so that 6 per cent, will hardly be a paying rate for mortgages. A war loan ot £12,000,000 is proposed by the Government, and part of this is to be raised locally. Wo think this should moot with a ready response as the terms will be attractive and money is plentiful, also from a patriotic spirit many will be ready to take a share in helping the financing of the war CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS. (Peb United PnEsa Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 27. There is nothing doing in the local wheat market, but some inquiries are now coming to hand from North Island millers, probably in consequence of the firmer tone the southern market has taken. There is very little wheat now offering by growers, who are firm holders. . The Southland oats market is firmer, and several sales have been made _at Bluff at advanced rates. Locally there is practically nothing offering. The/potato market is rather firmer, and sales have been made at distant stations at £6, where £5 15s was recently paid. There are some orders in hand, but few potatoes are offering. SHEEPSKIN SALES. The Dunedin Woolbrokcrs' Association (Messrs Dalgety and Co., A. Moritzson and Co., Nat'onal Mortgage and Agency Company. New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Otago Farmers' Co-opera-tive Association, Donald Raid and Co., Stronach, Morris, and Co., and Wright, Stephenson, and Co.) report as follows: The usual fortnightly sales were held yesterday, when medium catalogues were offered to the usual attendance of buyers.
