PALMERSTON NOTES.

PALMERSTON, Juno 21. Steady rain started to fall on Tuesday afternoon, and lias continued without a break for a period of 20 hours, and there seems to l>c every probability of it keeping on for some time. The. creeks and drains will get a thorough cleansing, which they needed badlv.

The annual mooting of tho Citizens' Band was held on Tuesday night. Owing to tho rain there was only a small attendance. Tho Mayor (Mr Beck) presided. Jhe balanoo sheet and report were approved, the statement showing that the band had a _most satisfactory balance in hand. The chairman complimented tho members on their readiness to assist on all occasions when required, giving their services freely. On Wednesday one of the local fruiterers when returning to tho shop after attending an ambulance meeting got a surprise. An aged Chinaman had retired for the night on the pavement in front of the shop, having made his bed under the verandah, and carefully placed his boots on the doorstep. The police found him a more comfortable bed for tho night. Tho local inhabitants are responding freely to the call for donations to the Bailors' Dopendents' Fund. Tho Mayor has opened a list, and a substantial amount will shortly be forwarded by him to the general fund.
