BOXING

NOVICE TOURNAMENT. Since tho war broke out the Otago Boxing Association has consistently refrained from conducting tournaments which would induce men eligible for active service to shirk their duty to King and country. It has been felt by members that while the older boxers were taking part in the nation's struggle it would be an unwise policy to allow boxing to die out altogether, and with the purpose of keeping it alive tho committee decided to hold a tournament open to members only, and for which only youths were eligible. There was a large attendance, and some very interesting exhibitions wore witnessed, the competitors being frequently applauded by those present. Mr S. S. Myere (president of the association) explained that tho association had sent many boxing men to the front, and they had given a very good account of themselves, lie thought the sport of boxing trained men for military life more than any othei- sport. The tournament throughout, was well conducted, and tho youths showed a good grounding in tho science of self-defence. A feature was a four-round contest of three minutes each between J. Bore-ham and E. Thwaites —two .little boys—who weighed exactly 5.-:t 131 b each. They boxed neatly throughout, and showed a very good knowledge of the art. The contest resulted in a draw, and the little chaps were cheered as they left the ring. The following are tho results : W. H. Lockie (sst 41b) beat J. F. Rosenbrock (6st 71b). E Rowe (7st 41b) beat J. Stewart (6st 121 b). \. Preston (7st 101 b) beat G. Smith (7st 101 b). J) J Gilchrist (3st slb) beat J. Kennedy (Bst 41b). ' J. Cuthbortson (9st 21b) beat H.
