AUSTRALIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER
MELBOURNE, October 25. The correspondence between the Federal Government and Sir George Reid with reference to the non-renewal of the latter’s term as High Commissioner has been published. Sir George Reid pointed out that he gave up his career at the bar and in the Federal House, representing £4OOO per annum, to take u position Q f great expense, which he looked upon as an official and not an uncertain political post, entitling him to expect a renewal for another term if his discharge of his duties was satisfactory. He subsequently received an implied promise of renewal from the Cook Government. The correspondence concludes with a letter from Mr Mahon, stating ; “ This Government declines to recognise the right of the previous Government to bind its successors by a verbal arrangement with respect to future vacancies in the public service.”
