BUSHRANGING DAYS RECALLED
SYDNEY, July 10. The death is announced of Mrs Ledwidge, aged 76, an old link with the bushranging days. The bushranger Power, after escaping from Pentridge (Victoria), stuck up the Ledwidge’s hotel at Humula. Mr Ledwidge escaped, mounted on Power’s horse, and went in search of the police. Meantime, Power ransacked the house in search of a bag of gold-dust } which, with another bag containing £6OO, Mrs Ledwidge had bidden. „The bushranger twice severely beat the defenceless woman with a gun barrel when she refused to disclose" the hiding-place. He twice set fire to the house, but deceased put out the fires. Eventually Power, after securing only £2 in cash and a cheque for £2O, fled, leaving his -victim bleeding on the floor.
