THE PANAMA EXHIBITION
MELBOURNE, August 19. Mr Cook says that as the States seem unprepared to accept any finanical responsibility for their representation at the Panama exhibition the Commonwealth is left alone to shoulder the burden. In the event, therefore, of thcStates declining to act the proposed Federal grant of £20,000 will probably be spent on some form of advertising Australia. BERLIN, August 20. Herr Balling (of the North German Steam Ship Company) says that vhe Government’s refusal to take part in the exhibition is a serious mistake, and that he will endeavour to arrange for a representative exhibit without Government aid. Many textile manufacturers are also complaining. The Frankfort Gazette regards abstention from the San Francisco exhibition as a mistake. The Government had been chiefly influenced by the iron and steel industries. The paper claims that the textile and other industries should have received greater consideration.
