CORRUPT POLICE
PARIS, August 17.
The policemen who were arrested had invented a system of blackmail in order to gain a premium for successful arrests. They apprehended innocent persons, and on arresting anyone for shoplifting would on route to the station slip something into the victim’s pocket. In one case, in which, a man of good family who was changing a gold piece for a lady was arrested and charged with living on her earnings, the constable, as they were going to the cells, whispered that the matter could be squared on payment of £4. The accused thereupon informed the magistrate, who increased his sentence for insulting a zealous servant of the State.
