ESCAPE FROM PRISON

NEW YORK. August 18,

Harry K. Thaw, the slayer of .Mr Stanford White on June 25, 1906, escaped from the hospital for the criminal insane at Matteawan early in the morning He darted through an open gate and through an open door. He got into a standing automobile and dashed to the Connecticut boundary. Five confederates manned the car. The police have the license number.

The hospital authorities believe that the fugitive made for the Long Island shore, where a yacht was waiting to convey him to Europe. The superintendent of the asylum, whom Thaw rushed past, has been arrested, and other arrests are expected. Five hundred dollars are offered a-s a reward. The escape was rendered possible through a declaration by the prisoner that unless he was legally liberated he would not escape, getting extra privileges. Uniformed police guard the hotel where Mrs Thaw is staying in New York owing to her fear of her husband
