ARCTIC EXPLORATION

COPENHAGEN, August 14

Captain Koch wintered on an island of ice to the eastward of Queen Louise Land. The majority of the horses were slaughtered, but five were kept alive by being fed on the slaughtered flesh Captain Koch fell 42ft down a deep crevasse, and was laid up with a broken leg for three months.

Violent blizzards were encountered during the party’s 750-mile march, and the horses became snow-blind. Three of these became so exhausted that they were killed. A sailor who was rescued by the expedition had been without food for 35 hours. When found he had just killed and cooked and was about to eat the dog which had accompanied him the whole wav.
