FLOODS IN INDIA
CALCUTTA, August 11. As the result of heavy rains some embankments collapsed on the Damodar river. A number of villages were destroyed, and there was great loss of life. Bard wan is six feet under water. Out of 30.000 inhabitants only 200 reached the railway station. Terrible loss of life is feared. The lino is submerged for 15 miles, cutting off communication. Miles of country are flooded, and thousands of people are homeless and starving. Their houses have been washed away and their cattle destroyed.
