A WHITE AUSTRALIA
SYDNEY, August 5. In the course of a farewell speech the Consul-general for China, who is returning homeward, said he hoped that Australian legislation would be so modified as to give discretionary powers to admit the better class of merchants and students without imperilling the policy of a white Australia. The present rebellion, he added, would soon be ended. All intelligent Chinese were against it. One thing, however, was certain; there would never be a return to monarchical government.
