A SAD TALE. LONDON, April 2. The marine losses for the first quarter of the current year are over £2,000,000. LOSS OF THE OCEANA. LONDON, April 3. At the inquest on the bodies of these who lost their lives on the occasion of the collision between the steamer Oceana and the German barque Pisagua off Beachy Head on March 16 a verdict of accidental drowning was returned. The captain of the Oceana gave evidence to the effect that .he ordered the boats to be swung out and the passengers placed therein. He did not order the lowering of the boats, as such a thing was dangerous while the vessel was moving. The chief officer admitted that he had ordered the lowering of the boats, as he believed that the vessel would sink at any moment. COLLISION AT SEA. MALTA, April 2. The Peninsular and Oriental s.s. Syria, en route to Japan, collided with' the French steamer Circe near Algiers in a dense fog. Her 94 passengers rushed on deck in a panic. Neither steamer was severely damaged. The Syria will take four days* to repair.
