EXTENSION OF TRADE. SUGGESTED CO-OPERATION. LONDON, April 2. The Shipping Gazette mentions a rumour of a syndicate that is interested in the Australian and New Zealand trade negotiating for the purchase of the Union Steam Ship Company. April 3. There is more than one aspirant for cooperation with the Union Steam Ship Company with a view to extending its route and bringing it into closer touch •with the lines trading between Britain and Australasia, and possibly elsewhere. [lnquiries at the head office of the Union Company elicited the information that nothing is known hero with reference to the negotiations by the syndicate mentioned above.] April 5. The Manchester Guardian says it is rumoured that the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Ship Company is about to acquire the Union Steam Ship Company, though the Canadian Pacific Company and a recently-formed syndicate are also similarly credited. SYDNEY. April 7. The manager of the Peninsular and Oriental Company denies the rumour that hia firm is about to absorb the Union Company.
