Moose in George Sound.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I observed in the Otago Witness some remarks by Mr W. Johnson about the moose in George Sound being in poor condition. I have no doubt he is correct. I have been over miles of that part of the Sounds, and tho wonder to me is that any of the animals are still living—the place is not good enough for goats to live in. Of almost all the places in the Sounds the part selected is about the worst that could be found, and it seems to me that those in the Tourist Department responsible for. sending the moose to the locality can know little or nothing of the place. I am afraid that before long not one will be alive: that they will be starved out. I know of places in the Sounds with miles of open grass country, and miles of flat bush country, and not very far from George Pound— some of the best places, on the West Coast for deer. Had the Tourist Department consulted some of those familiar with the Sounds country, the unfortunate mistake might have bean avoided.—l am, etc., West Coast. September .26
