HAWEA FLAT

October- 12:—The weather has been far from favourable from the point of view of either pastoralist or farmer, and heavy rains are badly needed to bring the crops away. The spring has been an. exceedingly late, and backward one, amd until the warm weather of the past fortnight set in but little growth was apparent. Farewell Social.—Having disposed of their land at Hawea, Messrs A. and J. Allison have bouight a farm at Greenfield, and previous to their departure were entertained at a farewell social on the evening of the 4th ins*. Very short notice had been given, but there were a large number present, and a very pleasant evening was spent. During an interval Mr M'Carthy, speaking on, behalf of the residents, expressed regret at their departure .and appreciation of their many good qualities. Mr Smith also spoke. On behalf of his brother and himself, Mr A. Allison made a feeling and appropriate reply. Tihie permitting, it had been intended to present the guests of the evening with some small, token- of goodwill, but this will be forwarded later. Messrs Allison are settlers of the class which no district can well afford to lose, and. they carry with them to their new home the best' wishes of neighbours and friends for their future success.

Tennis. —At the. annual meeting of the Hawea Tennis Club Mr R. Kingan was reelected president and Mr P. M'Carthy vicepresident. Mr J. A. Barclay was elected secretary. A strong Works-. Committee was appointed, and improvements are at present being; effected on the Domain. Two courts 'have been prepared, and it is -intended to open the season on Saturday next. , (Wedding.—A wedding of local interest was celebrated at Middlemarch on the 11th inst., the contracting parties being Miss L. Barclay, of Hawea, and Mr H. Ewinig, of Minarat Station 1 , Lake Wanaka. The ceremony was performed at the residenoe of the bride's sister by the Rev. Mr Todd, and later in the day the newly-married couple left for Dunedin and Oamaru on their wedding tour. Before leaving Hawea .Miss Barclay "■■• was the recipient'of a number of presents from friends and well-wishers. A paiir of sjlver-uiouinited brushes were also presented as a mark of appreciation of her willingness to assist at all events of a social nature. In making the presentation Mr M'Lewnan referred iir the highest terms to Miss Barclay's connection with public matters and entertainments generally. "The future residence of Mr and Mrs Ewimg will be at Minaret Station.

Elections.—Very little' interest is being taken in elections locally, but with regard to the, Wabatipu seat it is reported that a strong effort will be made to induce Mr J. Horn, of Bannoekburn. to oppose the sitting member. Should Mr Horn consent to sta.nd there can 'be little doubt that a good contest will ensue. .Mr Horn has acted •as chairman, of * the Vincent County Council for several years, and is deservedly popular in the electorate.
