LONDON, May 9
Lord Carrington presided at the Colonial Institute, when Sir George Reid gave an address on the past, present, and future of Australia. Lord Denman, Sir J. Forrest, and Mr M'Gowen subsequently spoke. Sir George Reid said he looked forward with great confidence to Lord Denman having a distinguished career in Australia.
The Mall Gazette says that the immigration statistics were the feature of Sir George Reid's paper. A gain of 36,500 in 1910, however, was only a little better than nothing when the vast spaces of the country were considered. It was still an urgent duty of the State Governments to encourage immigration.
