BISHOPRIC OF WAIAPU.
ARCHDEACON AVERILL CONSECRATED. NAPIER, January 16. There was an extremely large congregation at the consecration of Archdeacon AveriH as Bishop of Waiapu, which took place in Napier Cathedral at midday today. The service, which was fully choral, was conducted by the Primate (Bishop Nevill), and was' carried out in an impressive manner. All the Bishops of the province, with the exception of the Bishop of Melanesia, were present, in addition to other visiting clergymen end a large number of the clergy of the Diocese of Waiapu. The Bishop-elect was presented to the Primate by Bishop Williams (his predecessor) and tire Bishop of Nelson (Dr Mules). The epistle was read by the Bishop of Wellington (Dr Wallis), and the Gospel by the Bishop ‘of Auckland (Dr Neligan). The preacher was the Bishop of Christchurch (Dr Julius), whose text was “ I am among you as He that serveth.” In the course of the sermon he spoke of the influence, on the English episcopate of the revival of spiritual life, which began among the very humblest and purest, and of the example of a . missionary bishop, such as Sslwyn. The change had surely taken place without loss of dignity, nay, rather with ga.in of that dignity which came of service. Referring to the Bishop-elect, the Preacher said he, knew from long knowledge of him that he longed to. and that he would, make of his new office, ;as he had of others; an opportunity of service, and he appealed to him to’ be faithful to principles and indifferent to results. The offertorv; in aid of the Bishopric Endowment and the Sea House Fund, realised £47. The institution of the new Bishop will be held to-night.
