CANTERBURY.
At the Timaru Magistrate's Court two milk vendors (one of them the Dairy Company) were fined £3 each, and a third £2, with" costs (£2 9a. each), for selling milk below the regulation standard in cream contents. There waa no suggestion of watering, the explanation being that the milk being milk of the night before, the cream had risen, to the top and had been delivered to the customers supplied before the inspector took his samples. The remedy recommended was stirring the milk in the can*. ■At ike Chanstchurch Magistrate's Court J. Fairbairn pleaded "Groilty" to making a bet at the Canterbury Joclsey Club's Grand National- meeting, the result' of which de» pended on the totalisator dividend.- The magistrate imposed a fine of £10 and costs. Mr W. Lowrie, the retiring director of Lincoln Agricultural College, will be presented with an illuminated address; by the Farmers' Union at a picnic to be held at the college on Thursday next. Farmers and gardeners are beginning to complain of the want of rain. In November the rainfall was .724, and for the whole year to date the figure is 21.772. This is several inches below the average, and but little rain can be looked for between now and harvest. Still the feed holds out fairly well, but a good shower would be welcomed by everybody.
