RISING SUN-GOLDEN RIVER RELIEF FUND.

TO THE EDITOB. Sir, — Seeing we ha,ve no discretionary power to alter the clear conditions of the present subscription — an equal and weekly division between widows Hosking and Macgregor, — if anything is to be done for any of the other widows it must be done by a separate subscription. In addition to Mrs Luck's case, which is imperative, tlieie is also the case of Mrs Maddock and Mis Nicol&on. We are privateiy advised that if something is done for Mrs Maddock and Mrs Nicolson *many subscriptions will be forthcoming from Cromwell and the Upper Clutha. Now, we do not pretend to be imbued with the feelings, the nice discrimination, the fine hi am poise of a skinflint Charitable Aid Boaid, whose chief business is, perhaps, to protect its own pocket ; and as we wish to clear thi- business right up to date, leaving no regrets behind, we propose opening a- &übsciiption for th c widows Luck, Maddock, and Nicolson, to be divided equally and weekly between the three widows exactly as the Rising Sun-Goklen River subscription is conducted. Wo are not inviting discussion; we are not asking for suggestions. We undertake to do certain work on explicit conditions, aoid we plank down our own money to give the thing a start, the same as we did' before. "We wish it distinctly understood that we cannot under any circumstances penetrate further into the past than the cases of Maddock and Nicolson. The battle of life is in front, not behind. We would also like to state that in future we will discontinue the courtesy of acknowledging subscriptions except through the medium of the Otago Daily Times, thus saving a deal of labour. To avoid confusion, subscribers to .the new fund must mark their lists distinctly " Luck, Maddock, Nicolson Fluid." For our protection and .for future reference in case of error or -dispute, these lists will be carefully preserved, and open for inspection. We trust the position is fairly clear. There is the Rising Sun-Golden River F'..rs. n ~5 tbf>xs ■' -, the Luck, Maddock, Nicolson Fund. Persons suo-' scribing to both funds should write the words on their lists " For equal division between both funds." Chequas and money orders should be made payable to " J. H. Davidson, secretary Relief Funds, Alexandra." The lists guiding us as to the intention of subscribers. Should any doubt exist as to the intention of any subscriber, the money -will be divided eqvially between the funds. — I am, etc., J. H. Davidson. Secretary Relief Funds Committee. Cromwell, August 24.
