RISING SUN— GOLDEN RIVER RELIEF FUND.

TO THK EDITOR. RIR —'The following I'-uliscrijjtions have been receive:! dining the week, and, alter equal division, s*i t to tho respective widews. As the amount «übsciibed is ovei the money oid«r Janit, we have opened a lc'iof accoiivil v.itli the Bank of Xew Zealand and enclose ctaposit slip fcr the amount subscribed. Perhaps we cannot convey our thanks bet+&r for the piompt and generous lesponse to one appeal tnar t» s.ve expie^sion to xhe hope that none oi tW-e aiibscubng or their dependants v.'ill c\ei need similar assistance. We realise that we ,ue merely the servants oi sub;cnbers, and coni^ we have never vsorkect loi better inaotei*. v,!io=e only fault is io send along 100 much money—apparently mr the lAwe mischief of the thing, —reflecting boaiuiuilly the during instinct, the impulse and si/irit of the goldfields. —l am, eU- , J. H. Davidsox,

TO THE EDITOK. Snt.—We notice with regret "Dredge Hand's" leter m Monday's Daily Times. A moment's lefleetion rnxist convince anyone thai, interference of this sort touds to injure, not only the interests of Mrs Hoskiugs and Mrs Macgregor, but also renders tho lask more difjicuTit in obtaining aid for a,uy other widows who might need assistance. In our opinion, to introduce any disturbing clement is merely kicldng tho plug oait of the boat that is bearing the widows and orphans across the flood, and making the brave craft unfit to embark on similar missions of mercy. We arc not asking for suggestions, but subscriptions. When we want advice we will g-o to a. lawyer and pay for it. Mrs Luck lost her husband sinca this subscription .started, so th:! scheme cannot now be made comprehensive enough to embrace the three widows, nor would we like to undertake the perilous task ourselves. The other widows mentioned by "Dredge Hand"—Mrs Madctoek And Mrs Nicholson—lost their husbands many months ago, and if "Dredge Hand" wishes to! assist cither of them we think he has had an ample opportunity to d» so, mere especially as the widows reside in his district. Tie asksi: "What is going to be done for Mrs Luck 9" Let him answer the question himself. What has he done for any of the widows? We believe in finishing one ]ob before commencing another. We have absolutely no power to close the Hosking-M-ticgi egor subscription even if we had tha wish. Our business is tc administer the fund in accordance with the conditions published in tho Otago Daily Times of August 3. We drgrW " Dredge Hand's " attention to an unwrirtcn condition of tho subscription—namdy, if ho does not liko to subscribe he need not. Further, we might add that we have written inquiring into Mrs Nucholson's case, which we believe to bo particularly hard. We have/ also written to Mr A Louden, master of the Waikaka United No. 1 dredge, inquiring 1 into the cirouinstances of the luckless Mr? Luck. Palpably, unless harmony and good feeling is maintained, veiy little "^•n bq ciono for anyone. We have no time to

discuss side issues and complications, and all we a=h is . That those who do not care to cooperate remaiii perfectly passive. — I am, etc., J. H Davidson. Secretary R.S. and G.R. Relief Fund Committee.
